Our Trip To Key West

I have lived in Florida since 1968 . I always wanted to go to Key West. My wish finally came true on May 15, 2010 with the help of our son, Samuel and his wife, Mary.

There is something special about Key West that has beckoned to me over the years. I've wanted to go there and expierence the ambiance and charisma of that historical place.
My husband had been there before I met him and was not enthusied about going back again. I kept dreaming and talking about it .

Our oldest son, Sam and his wife, Mary had never been there and said they'd like to go. We made reservations on a large boat called the Key West Express which departed from Fort Myers Beach on May 15 at 8:30 Am. It took us 3 1/2 hrs to get there on the jet powered, 155 foot boat . The catamaran had three decks, a comfortable lounge complete with AC, Tv's , food and drinks.
We sat on the upper deck and enjoyed the sun and blue green sea. We saw dolphins and a few other boats as we skimmed across the gulf waters !

The port of Key West was quite busy.
The town lay right at sea level. We gazed in awe at the picturesque landscape and quaint buildings which were a part of that wonderful place.

We took a trolly tour that took us to twelve historical places . One could get off and on at any time . Every half hour another trolly would come along and take us to the next place. The tour guides were interesting and informative. We had a grand time listening to their colorful tales filled with good information and myrth.

Hemingways Home was delightful , filled with charm and a sense of nostaliga. The famous six toed cats were there. We visitd the old Light House and climbed eighty eight steps to its top, up a narrow winding metal stair case. The veiw was spectacular!

We had lunch at Margariettaville! The food was good, but a litte pricey. They showed on going musical videos of Jimmy Buffet and friends. We saw Sloppy Joes , The Key West Aquarium and many other places.

The trolly took us to the Southern Most Point in the US . We were only ninety miles from Cuba. We passed the Little White House , which Pres. Harry Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy visited. It's on the Historical register.

There are many shoppes, stores resturants, art galleries and museums which offer a variety of things to see and do, plus many other tourist attractions.
The streets are narrow. Many of the older houses were wood framed and built close together. The city stretches from the Gulf coast to the Atlantic and is approximately four miles wide in places.

All too soon our day came to an end. As we boarded our boat that evening, we took many wonderful memories with us.

On the voyage back we saw a majestic sunset as the orange sun sank into horizans edge. I've never seen anything quite like it! The vision is still lingers in my mind !

We arrived back at Fort Myers Beach at 10pm. Slowly we drove home, content, tired and happy. The memories shared on that day will be with us for many years to come. Dreams do come true !!

If any of you are ever lucky enough to go to Key West, plan to stay three or four days , so you can see everything, AND, be sure to take lots of money with you!!!!

MaryGrace, I did not realize you are a Floridian. Key West, the one you describe is quite a bit different from recollections of my visit there of long ago, 1961. Jimmy Buffet and Margariettaville were unknown names in that era. But Papa Hemingway, birds and bars were part and parcel of that Key West. As well as sunsets to remember for a lifetime. And the Gulf, beautiful beyond description. So glad your dream was fulfilled MaryGrace. May peace and love be always with you my friend. Jon Michael
