This is a true story from my childhood

THE PROWLER...... I think this TV show is so funny, grandma. Why are you turning the sound down?SHhhhhhh. Betty, did you hear something? No, mom, why? I heard a noise at the window. This is a family of , grandmother, daughter, who is expecting a baby in three weeks, and four children. The grandfather is at work. The closest neighbor is one mile up the road. There is no car or phone at home. What did you hear grandma? Oh, nothing I guess, maybe a rabbit. So we get all quiet again, no sound but the TV .Mom, I heard a noise at the bedroom window, Shhhhhh. We need to look out the windows to see if anyone is out there. So, my grandmother and my pregnant mom, get up to look for prowlers. They looked out of Living room window, nothing but a dark night. They looked out of the bedroom windows, nothing, same with bath room and kitchen. So they went back to the living room. About ten minutes later, we all heard a noise at the screen door. The big porch is screened in. Who ever it is , just pulled the screen door open, we heard the latch come off. My little short grandmother, screamed out loud enough for whoever it is, to hear, you better leave now, we are loading the shot gun.My mom looked out of window and saw a man there. She put her hands over her mouth to silenced the scream. My grandma, said, let's all sit here and be quiet, it's three more hours untill Pop gets home. It was quiet for about thirty minutes.Three of the kids are asleep on the floor. We haven' heard anything lately, so we were beginning to relax some. I think if someone wanted to know what we were watching on TV, at that time, no one could really say. All of a sudden, we heard a loud noise from out side. Mom says, we have to do something. My grandma said, there is only one thing we can do, someone has to go to the neighbors for help.I have been in a back brace, so I can't run. Betty is pregnant, the three little ones are asleep, that leaves you Terri. It's up to you to get help here.We are talking about a nine year old little girl, here, mom. we need to take our chances and fight him off if he comes in. The three of us can do it. Mom, I can get help, I'm the fastest runner in school. About that time, we heard a big crash at the kitchen window. We run into the kitchen and there's the man trying to climb in. My grandma said, run like the devil is after you, Terri! She was hitting him with the broom handle. I took off running. I got about a half mile away from home, and I heard mom behind me, don't stop Terri! I looked behind me and mom was moving as fast as she could with the man right behind her, he was about to grab her when a shot gun went off. I ran into someone on the path. It was our dear old neighbor. He said, run on to the house, Terri, I will help your family. The man had run the other way towards the woods, when he heard the gun go off. I made it to the house. His wife had called the police. And we waited. We heard and saw a lot of police cars going down to our house. About two hours later, he came in and said, I'm walking you home now. I saw a lot of men getting ready to leave. They had come to help with the hunt.Come to find out, he had broken out of prison. He was in there for the murders of four people. Our neighbor had heard it on the news and they had told where the mans ex wife lived at the time he went to jail.He thought his ex was living there! Thats why Mr. Jack was on the path.He was coming to check on us. I overheard my mom telling my Pop that the police said , if he had gotten in,someone would be dead, if not all of us.
