The Day After is a fictionalized version of a real episode in my life. I began to write this story last year during a writing class I was teaching. I had my students start a piece with the following line: �I stand before him holding the roses�� Whenever I give an assignment to my students, I do it as well. To my surprise, I wrote about an old boyfriend from high school who never gave me flowers�this is what I thought might happen if he had.
