Namaste

The sherpas are indispensable companions for any high mountain climbing in this part of the world.Along with the Thakals, the Sherpas apparently came originally from eastern Tibet. They settled in the valleys and the trading routes between India and Tibet.Sherpa villages are spread out affairs with ample two storied farmhouses under gabled roofs.Their animals are housed and their tools are stored on the ground floor, while the upper story is one large room with the hearth in a cornor. It was here when I was a visitor to Dupsang Lama's home that I met with his wife and two children. It is here by the hearth that the family lives its life, eating and drinkng, laughing and singing and telling tales.Dupsang Lama's wife with her black hair combed back had in her ears two very large circular gold earrings and in her nose the traditional gold nose ring.Dupsang Lama never told me the story how his daughter lost her right forearm and hand.Perhaps in a accident. They are a deeply religious people and are often at prayer. They believe in the doctrine of reincarnation, where the good and the evil done in a previous life are tallied and the prospects for a new life are fixed. If a man succeeds in leading enough good lives he may be freed of the necessity for further reincarnation.I took a few pictures of the family. We departed the village.
