Sweet Nothings From Milan (Sample)

By Darryn John Murphy

The plane began its decent into Florence it had been a long flight and I was looking forward to touching ground again. I had been dreaming of this day for so long and after saving enough it was finally coming true . The beauty on stepping out of the airport was breath taking.

I kept taking in the beauty of my surroundings as the taxi took me to the hotel. After arriving at the hotel I checked in and was shown to my room by a charming bellboy. I was to be situated in room 110 which had a stunning view. I thanked the bellboy and tipped him, he wished me all the best on my stay.

Even though I was starting to suffer the effects of that 14-hour flight I was too excited to sleep. I decided to freshen up and put my things away it was time to get out and explore this beautiful city, I had heard that it was famous for its boutiques and cafes and if anything I could do with a bite to eat after my flight.

Before I left I went to the front desk and enquired about getting a map as I didn't want to get lost the desk clerk replied, "I'll get you one Miss Prescott. After taking the map and conveying my thanks I was headed off to explore. As I stepped out of the hotel I took in the wonderful smell of the flowers growing on the raised flowerbeds.

Hmm I think if the rest if the city is anything like the smells and sights I have experienced so far I may just have to stay. Right now though its time for food. A short while later I spotted a small café which look charming in its own right. So it was there I decided to stop for a bite to eat before I continued exploring the shops.

Sitting on the front terrace at one of the tables I browsed through the menu finally deciding on a beef and salad sandwich and a cappuccino. While waiting for my order to arrive I was glancing around at my surroundings everything and everyone looked to be in a rush of one degree or another. A few minutes later my meal arrived.

While eating my lunch I was glancing around a second time and upon a closer inspection I couldn't help noticing that things weren't as rushed as they first appeared to my eyes, things were rather laid back and relaxed. It's nothing like the hustle and bustle of home. I had nearly finished my lunch and while deciding what to do next I was thinking to myself that the men around here didn't look too bad either.

I wasn't overly missing work and I knew the girls back home would be jealous if they could see me now. I was finding out first hand that the world had so much more to offer in person than it ever did in reading about places.

After I finished my meal and paid the bill I headed down the road and came upon a florist shop, the roses out the front on display smelt lovely I just had to get one so I brought a single pink rose and headed back towards the hotel. It was such a beautiful day as I strolled back to the hotel the birds were singing the sky was a bright blue and the scent of the rose I had just brought was so sweet smelling all the while thinking to myself that this couldn't get any better.

When I arrived back at the hotel the clerk on the front desk inquired if I would be interested in joining a tour party leaving at 9am the next morning to visit one of the local vineyards. To me that sounded wonderful so my name was added to the list for the next day I left the foyer and headed back up to my room for a rest before dinner.

I set the alarm on the clock to wake me up a couple of hours later. The alarm went off so after pushing the snooze button I stretched out feeling a lot more refreshed and relaxed. Thinking that it would be nice to go shopping for a new dress before the outing tomorrow, I put on some make up on tidied myself and slung my sweater around my shoulders in case it got chilly later and headed out for the afternoon.

I stopped off at the great little café I had been to earlier for another cappuccino. Not long after I had ordered a waitress delivered my coffee, after she had put it down I asked her if she knew of any good dress shops near by. She was telling me of a few but I was getting confused so I showed her the map and she was nice enough to mark a couple of locations on there for me.

I thanked her and after finishing my drink I made my way to the first location on the map, which wasn't that far away. When I got there it was nice to see a vast selection of dresses for once. It wasn't long before I found lovely white dress with a fitted bodice and long flowing skirts and shoestring straps.

There were other lovely dresses but the white of this one seemed to match my completion better. I also decided to buy some low healed strappy sandals in a nice shade of silver. By the time I had finished shopping it was starting to get late so I headed back to the hotel for dinner.

After a scrumptious meal I was starting to think it would be nice to just relax for the night and maybe spend some time reading in my room. After a couple of hours reading my eyes began to feel heavy and slowly I drifted off to sleep.

I awoke early the next morning it seemed to be just before sunrise. I got up and wrapped my dressing gown around myself and went to watch the sun rise out on the terrace. Sitting there with a slight breeze I noticed the first rays of colour bursting from on the horizon first came the shades of pink then as it rose higher the colour began to deepen and that was when the oranges and soft purples began to intermingle as the sun rose higher still everything got lighter and I could tell it was going to be another lovely day, after that I went for a shower and got dressed for the day and headed downstairs to the continental breakfast in the dinning room I decided on a cafe latte and a croissant, and then went back for two pieces of toast dressed with butter and marmalade.

After that it was time to prepare for the outing to the vineyard so I made my way back upstairs and packed my day bag for the outing once i got back to the foyer I saw a group of people milling around together and decided to enquire with one of them if this was for the guided tour. While we were waiting I started chatting to a nice couple from England named Geoffrey and Debra.

They were a quaint little couple he would have been around fifty and she seemed to be slightly younger from what I could tell. We hit it off straight away. While we were talking we were discussing various bits and pieces and what we did for a living, they mentioned that they were here for a second honeymoon Debra mentioned that they had been married for twenty years. She asked if I had come to Florence looking for love perhaps.

I answer quickly with a no and commented that I had learned about Florence through books at work and wanted to see it for myself. Good for you dear she replied and with that we were on our way to the vineyard. The scenery was delightful along the way. We travelled just out of the city limits. The view was simply stunning as we entered the vineyard. As I had never seen a vineyard before I was pleased to hear we had a bit of time to look around on our own before the guided tour and tasting were to start.

As I made my way deep into the vineyard through the rows of plump ripe grapes I was rummaging through my day bag looking for my camera when I dropped most of what was in my bag.

I knelt down to start picking it all up when a hand came through the vines passing me my purse. At this point I didn't know what to think. As I stood up there he was standing before me with his tall frame, tanned skin and the darkest brown eyes you would be likely to ever see his whole facial structure changed as he smiled at me, "good day to you madam, I'm Giovanni I believe this is yours," as he handed me my purse I went to reach for it and our fingers touched for the briefest of moments but that was all it took to feel the electricity pass between us.

I thought to myself hmm Giovanni you are, then replied, "I'm Anne pleased to meet you Giovanni," "the pleasure is all mine," he said as he took my hand and kissed it gently, this sent another tinging sensation all the way down my spine.

He asked if he could have the honour of showing me around his city. And well with an offer like that how could a girl say no. So I humbly accepted his offer.
As we walked along the vineyard we were talking about everyday stuff and about where I was from and what I did for a living so I told him and asked him what he did. He replied that he worked here in the vineyard. When I asked him if he was living nearby he mentioned a villa here and a house in Milan where he spends part of the year.
