new spring foals

Spring’s First Gold

A mare with a new foal stages a sort of debut when turned out on pasture for the first time. Once the new mother has determined that there is no danger, she displays her little treasure to the world, strutting along the fence line with her tail up, neck arched, glowing with pride in the warm sun, the new baby bouncing along at her side.

There are innocent wonders to be rediscovered in watching a new foal trying out its long legs in a spring pasture. You can see the joy and excitement in the little creature’s eyes on finding out that those spindly, unmanageable pipe stems can fly at a dead run across the wide expanse of green’s first gold. The foal will tire quickly at first, taking frequent naps in the soft grass while mother stands guard. But those legs will get stronger as months fly by, building strong bones, tendons, and hooves.

I have been told that thoroughbred foals have to be born in the dead of winter, as the official Jockey Club birth date is January 1. I understand that this date was originally established to ensure that all the young horses being raced in a competition for three-year-olds, for instance, were of the same age.

I know that thoroughbred colts begin training early to prepare for these races, and that the thoroughbred industry has great deal invested in the present system. But I still can’t help thinking that since little race horse foals have to grow up so fast, they should be allowed a brief, carefree time in the sun.
