Twin Tales - The Skate Park

When you're 9..its the small things that are the best.

It was Saturday. I woke up just like any other Saturday, 'cept Mom didn't have to work today. But was something besides that was different... oh YEAH! Spring break started today! We had no school for a whole week!!! I jumped up and looked out the living room window. Mom let me sleep down here last night because my brother had spent the night at a friend's house. It looked good out there! The sun was just starting to come up over the mountains. Dang! It was early...but no rain, no snow, no clouds today! What a lucky break! Mom said that if it was nice we could go to the skatepark. AND IT'S NICE!!!
A little while later, Mom came down to start the coffee. Boy, she NEEDS her coffee!! "Mom?" I asked in my nicest voice. "Yeah, Baby?" she answered. (I always like it when she calls me baby) "Its nice, do you think we could go?" "Hmmm, lemme see..." she peeked out the window, "okay, after lunch." WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I yelled out...my excitement woke up Dad,who sleeps in the dining room (it's confusing, don't even ask) which probably wasn't the best thing, but he had to get up for work anyway.
So now...I wait...counting the hours till "after lunch". Why, oh why did I get up so early? Mom goes back to her room to work on some writing she was doing. Aaron, my twin, comes home from his friend's house and we settle in to watch "The Mummy". That monster is really NASTY! I lean over to Aaron..."Ya know what?" "Chicken butt" he says...which makes me wanna slug him but good. "No, SERIOUSLY!!" I say. "Mom's taking us to the skatepark." His face got all happy "Really??? When???" "Yeah, after lunch". He looked sad then. Aaron wants everything yesterday, Mom says.
I'm Adam, by the way. That's my best friend's name too, so I won't confuse you, we'll call him Petey, which is what his mom and dad call him...I don't really know why, that's confusing too. But a lot of things are confusing to me...I'm 9. I'm the oldest twin. I always have to say that because Aaron is so much bigger than me...but I'm older, by a whole eleven minutes.
We fill the morning with errands and visits, and then stop for lunch, that wondermous, most excellent time of day because when we are done, then its "after lunch" and then....yeah, you guessed it! We stop at home to get our skates and helmets and Petey. Into the car and off we go, the five minute drive takes FOREVER!!!
Suddenly, there it is...the Skatepark. It's a magical place, I tell you. I've got ants in my pants as we park. We push and bump our way out of the car...we didn't even wear our shoes, our skates and helmets were already on...we were set. There they are...the ramps, the grinding rails, the volcano, the steps, the straights, the platforms...Oh Man!!! The metal rails didn't really shine, just kind of had a cold glow..and the smooth, slick, gray concrete...I couldn't wait! Oh!...and the WHEELS! Bikes and skateboards and blades of all different styles and colors...the bikes set up with standing pegs for flips and tricks...cool. The sounds of metal on metal, the slapping sound that the wheels make as they go over bumps and cracks in the concrete. It's like another planet!!
The day was perfect, sunny, cool breeze. We're all a little scared to get right in there. The bigger boys and teenagers are doing all these bad tricks, and none of us are all that good at skating. We skate the straights to warm up as mom sits at a picnic table. She's smiling, its a good day for her too. Okay, I'm gonna go for it! Down a ramp I go...breeze blowing in my face, picking up speed till I get to the bottom of the pit, then SWOOSH!!! Up the hill to the top of the volcano!! Aaron tries the big pool...he skates up the sides some, but can't get out without taking his skates off. I guess he's big, but not quite big enough. Petey skates fast, getting the hang of the smaller ramps and sides. We race, we try tricks, grinds and flips. We don't finish many of our tricks, but we're trying and someday we'll kick some serious booty out here.
The sun bounces into our faces off the dark metal rails, boys on the bleachers are checking out the other guys doing tricks. Wow! Some guy just did a front flip in his blades!!! SWEET!!! And he was a grown up...I'm sure I'd NEVER see my dad do that!!! We skate, laugh and have a great time. The afternoon goes too fast when Mom says its time to go...but thats okay, we're worn out. "Did you see that wicked trick? Did you see that cool grind? Did you see me in the pool? Did ya? Did ya? Did ya?"
"Yeah, Baby, I did..."
Did I mention I always like it when she calls me baby?
