A Walk in the Woods
By Maura Clegg
Thursday, April 19, 2007

Rated "PG13" by the Author.

Reminding you that you never know what can happen when you go for a walk in the woods

Kayla was walking through a wooded area near her home when she thought she heard a noise coming up behind her. She knew that there were women attacked all over the country when they were walking along, but she assumed that since she lived in a small country town that nothing like that could ever happen to her. She kept walking while trying to keep an ear on the noise that was still behind her and seemed to be getting closer by the second. Kayla was starting to get nervous, and she knew that there was no one around for miles.

Kayla knew that she shouldn’t have gone for the walk alone, but her husband Tyler was annoying her and she didn’t feel like driving into town to go to the gym. She threw on her old grey sweatpants and a tank top, laced up her cross-trainers and slammed out the front door of their newly remodeled farm. Kayla knew that she was lucky to have a man as patient and loving as Ty, and also a man who was not intimidated by the fact that she already had twin girls from her ex-husband. The girls, Madison and Miranda, just started school this year and Ty was the one who they wanted to drive them in every morning leaving Kayla to get ready for work on her own. Ty loved those kids like they were his own, and truly they were as he was the only father they had ever known. Their own no good father left when Kayla first came home from the hospital with the girls and she got her divorce by virtue of abandonment when he wasn’t heard from for the next year. She wished she could have had him declared legally dead, just for the stress he would have had to go through trying to bring himself back to life in the eyes of the system. That was not something that Kayle wanted to pursue though and she was going to just have to be happy with the fact that he was gone.

Her biggest problem now was the fact that the girls were turning six soon and the only thing either had asked for was a puppy. Kayla knew that they were too young to care for a dog on their own, besides which there were already three dogs in the house, but she really did have trouble turning down Miranda and Madison. Not that they were spoiled, but Kayla didn’t want them to want for anything.

The fight started because Kayla was looking on the internet for a reputable dog breeder who had a litter for sale, and Ty didn’t think the girls needed to have a dog yet. Kayla explained that since she was home working in the office that housebreaking the pup wouldn’t be an issue. Tyler refused to even see Kayla’s side of the argument and that was when she changed quickly and stormed out of the house without even her cell phone in case she got into trouble.

Trouble was behind her, Kayla was sure of that and she wasn’t sure what she was going to do about it. She was thinking if there was a way she could loop back to the house without abruptly just turning around. Kayla knew that running from an attacker would do no good; he would simply accelerate to match her pace and overtake her when she was winded and unable to fight back.

Kayla could feel the panic starting to take over making her feel more winded than she should be. She didn’t even dare try and sneak a peek behind her for fear that it would slow her down. She kept of her even pace and tried to tell herself that it would be okay; that she would not get attacked here, in her own woods where she grew up. Kayla kept a mantra going in her head saying, I’m okay, I will be safe, I’m okay, I will be safe. She hoped that positive energy flow would help her to figure a way out of the mess she was in.

Kayla walked for about another ten minutes slowly turning herself back towards the house so that when she ran for it the house was in sight and she hoped that Ty would hear her screams and come out and help her. She waited until she could see the tip of the chimney from the house and started to run for all she was worth, not turning to look back at all. She could see the roof of the house, then the attic, the second floor, and finally the front porch.

It was then that she looked behind her and saw Ty trying to catch up to her carrying something in his arms. She stopped running and stooped over trying to catch her breath and recover from the terror she had been feeling while she waited for him to catch up to her. When he got closer she would see a bow covering his forearm, the bow was attached to something small and furry. She was squinting to try and see what he had but her eyes were tearing up from the release of the fear she had been feeling.

Tyler finally caught up and placed a small golden pile of fur in her arms and told her that he bought the girls each a puppy for their birthday and that was why he was so adamant that she stop calling breeders. The second puppy, Kayla now noticed was curled up inside his jacket struggling to get free to be with his sibling. They were two of the cutest little lab puppies that Kayla ever saw and she was once again reminded what a wonderful man she married.

The simple little first comment, of course, is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Translation: You just don't place yourself in a position of vulnerability, whether you're walking in the woods or on your way back to your car from a shopping center. How wonderful cell phones are nowadays. Calling for help or just looking like you're calling for help and possibly giving a description of your likely assailant is a degree of protection. But Kayla's part in this speaks to her youth and immaturity. Ending an argument by slamming your way out the front door may be indicative of one of the symptoms of why she's in a second marriage. Mouths are not simply for gossiping and meaningless chit-chat.

Communication and respect. Respect and communication. Phrase it either way, but its something that can keep you and your relationships out of trouble and in harmony. Slamming your way out of the house is cutting off communication and demonstrating a total lack of respect. And there are a dozen different ways Ty could have kept his little puppy surprise a secret without deceiving Kalya and being at least partially the blame for her actions.

Cherish your partner and none of this happens. Inherently, "cherish" includes--guess what?--respect and communication.

A nice little "growing up" story with an element of suspense.
Kept my attention!
