How do we truly decide what we want to be when we “grow up?” How do we decide if we are in the right field of work, how do we take control of our destiny, and how do we decide to take the “Journey” from within.
A Journey From Within
Once you have mastered the theory “mind over matter” you must then prepare mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally for the journey. For some the “journey” will be a short and simple trip. For others the journey will be a long, hard tedious road to travel. I want to say it does not matter the amount of steps one must take to complete the journey. What truly matters is that you complete the journey that you believe in. I cannot tell you what your journey will entail or how long your journey will be. However, I do know that this basic road map will allow you to do and become great. This is not a book about answers; it is a book about questions. It is up to you to answer the questions which then shall lead you to unbelievable success and true happiness.
In 1996 as a Sacramento State University Cheerleader, I had the opportunity of a lifetime. Our cheerleading squad was one of sixteen in the nation selected to participate in the Centennial; Opening Olympic Ceremonies. On the night of the opening I looked up into the stadium and saw thousands upon thousands of cheering and excited faces. The energy was inspiring and moving. I was overwhelmed with the multitude of compassion and passion that I felt in that stadium. The memories from the Olympic opening ceremonies experience will never be lost in my heart, mind, body and soul. Despite all the glory and excitement of training; working hard; and performing for millions of viewers around the world, there is one memory and thought that remains vividly in my mind above all others. It was a simple quote placed on a T-Shirt I purchased as a souvenir. The shirt quoted Baron de Courbetin, the father of the Modern Olympic Games, “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part…The essential thing about life is not conquering but fighting well.” I paused for several minutes reading and re-reading the shirt. I was utterly amazed at how powerful these simple words truly were.
We constantly strive to be “number one” in everything. Our goal is to constantly run from one task to another, blindly committing our time, our lives, and our souls to other people. However, when all is said and done we are not any happier than we first began. We leave one unhappy job to only find ourselves in similar situations in another job. We leave one unhappy relationship to find ourselves in the same old situation. The question is WHY?! Why is it that we never stop to thoroughly plan out our next move, next step, next journey?
How do we truly decide what we want to be when we “grow up?” How do we decide if we are in the right field of work, how do we take control of our destiny, and how do we decide to take the “Journey” from within. At the age of twenty-three I wrote a motivational seminar titled “A Journey From Within…the Five Tools for Becoming a “Successful Person.” It was time for me to reflect and pause in my life. As I stated earlier I was raised in several different foster homes and two group-homes. I graduated from high school excelling in sports, performing arts, and student government. I had defied the negative thoughts and situations placed in my path by others. I had achieved what so many other people stated could not be done with relation to my circumstances. I had found away to beat the system fair and square. I had found and developed a formula for success. I attribute my current attitude and drive for life to my formula, which I will share with you in this chapter.
With every road trip or journey one must first decided where you are going, how long you will be gone, what will it cost, where you will rest along the way, how long will you stay at each destination, and who shall be your traveling companions, if any. Once you have collected all the bits and pieces of information you must then begin the pre-planning of the trip. The early planning stages would be the best time to check and recheck all of your facts and information, so that you start off on the right track. Once you have packed all the essentials then you are ready to begin your journey. In order to truly understand and benefit from this chapter; I feel you should master each tool prior to reading the rest of the book. The tools that I have selected are simple in concept and idea, and once you dive into the layers of the tools, you will truly understand why I selected theses particular tools.
Theses tools will help develop you into a newly inspired and motivated person. You will be equipped with the tools and power for changing a bad situation into good. Moreover, you will have the tools and power to create your own happiness. I feel the best part of mastering the use of these five tools is that you will have the power to smile every day, to laugh every day, and to be happy every day. So no matter how long the “Journey From Within” takes, you will always have the reserved strength to complete many more journeys.
So the question becomes, what does this have to do with becoming the “Boss” or anything else? What do these tools have to do with me becoming a success? I say: Everything. Once you have mastered the concepts and benefits of “Mind Over Matter,” theses five tools will allow you to become anything you want to be!
