"THE LOOK OF LOVE"

BY

Dennis W. Lid

For a father:

What is the look of love? It’s a young woman standing before her aged father. Half a head shorter than the slightly slumped figure of her papa she stands in her simple housedress and flats. Her long black hair combed neatly falls to her neck caressing each side of her lovely oval face. Her sparkling, dark brown eyes smile as she beholds her papa’s worn and wrinkled, yet gentle face. He stands motionless and patiently waits as she brushes the faded lapels of his only suit. Smilingly yet silently she straightens her papa’s tie and pulls it snugly to his collar. She bends back slightly from the waist, tilts her head a bit to one side, as if to scrutinize her handiwork, clutches her hands around her papa’s neck, broadens her already lovely smile in such a way so as to radiate love from her entire being throughout the room, nay, throughout the world even to the heavens, for I am sure that even God must have felt the warmth of that smile. Papa did…he began to smile back ‘till his lip trembled slightly and misty tears gathered in his eyes. She knew and understood without a word being spoken. She wouldn’t allow her father to be embarrassed, if one can be embarrassed by the look of love. She leaned forward and tenderly kissed his cheek. Papa reached up and gently stroked his daughter’s soft silken hair, pressing it delicately against her blushing cheek. Then they said good-by...and papa left. And as he walked out of the warm home into the cold unfeeling world, her eyes followed him, still smiling, with an added glint of respect and admiration as if to proudly say, “That’s my papa whom I love.”

For a husband:

I was looking up at the floorshow on the stage when I felt a sudden urge to turn my gaze toward my wife. To my surprise, she sat there, not two feet away, gazing back at me with such a look of love in her beautiful Asian eyes so as to melt the very root strings of my heart. For fully a moment, I sat there utterly enthralled with the image of perfection before my eyes. She wore a fixed yet gentle smile revealing the overwhelming infatuation she felt for her man, her very own Denny. Her man knew it, for he leaned toward her and tenderly kissed her cheek as she softly whispered in his ear, “Oh! Let’s go home and go to bed,”…and so they did. Yet, it was purely incidental and matter-of-fact, for they were very deeply and very wonderfully in love.
