Revised Introduction to Miracles Happen

A prolific movie producer once told me that getting my first screenplay made into a movie was a miracle. My entertainment attorney told me that only 1.1% of all screenwriters ever get a movie made. Fairytales were my favorite reading matter as a child. Thank goodness I believe in miracles or I would not have taken the first step toward my dream.
This is the story of my journey into the world of miracles where dreams can come true . And what are dreams but the yearnings of our hearts to achieve all that God has in store for us? However, many of us have obstacles blocking our dreams that can only be solved by the intervention of God’s miracles. How do we enter that world of miracles?
Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27, NASB). You have to be open to hear the Voice of God.
I’ve heard it said that you always know when God is talking to you because He always expects you to do things you either don’t want to do or feel you can’t do. However, when God calls your name, He will get your attention one way or another because He is the most persistent voice you will ever hear.
I dreamt of becoming a best-selling writer of novels since I was a little girl, but let’s face it. I might as well have wanted to be a movie star. Still, I plugged away after my husband died, receiving the most interesting rejections, such as: I don’t think I’m capable of adequately representing this really great book. You have written a really fine novel, which you should be proud of. I’m sorry I don’t have the time to represent it. Please send it somewhere else.
What did that mean? Hit the road Jack, and don’t you come back no more? For me it meant another rejection letter thrown in the trash, then back to writing more query letters.
Even after being signed by one of the top literary agents in the country, the rejections from publishers kept coming. Finally my agent wrote, “This book deserves to be published. I can’t understand why I can’t sell it.”
I can. It was God all along. He wanted to give me the desires of my heart, but first, there were some things I needed to learn--like persistence and patience. God’s timing was not my timing. I wanted to learn everything I needed to know immediately. Is there anyone out there who likes waiting?
One Internet blogger accused me of getting the idea for the movie “September Dawn” from aliens. Let me clear something up, God never runs out of ideas. Open yourself up to the Lord through prayer and meditation on His Word because one great idea from the Lord can change your life like it did mine.
While driving around in Colorado, I began daydreaming about a young woman on her way to the California Gold Rush in a wagon train. I knew that I had to write a movie about her. The funny thing was, I didn’t know how to write a screenplay, and didn’t have any idea how to go about getting a movie made. But when God wants you to do something, He opens the doors.
A few years prior to writing “September Dawn,” I became friends with Sharon Cain, the wife of producer/director Chris Cain, who just happened to make one of my favorite Western movies, “Young Guns.” Because of our close friendship, I was able to take my scripts to Chris and ask him his opinion. Chris patiently told me to buy a program called Final Draft so that my scripts would look like screenplays. The rest is history. Chris and I went on to collaborate on the incredible story I initially thought I had made up. It was only when I went to the Internet to research the trails the wagon trains took that I discovered that the story was real.
God loves to “use the foolish things of the world to confound the wise” (see 1 Corinthians 1:27). He provides the way if we simply say, “Whatever, God, I’ll do it.”When God calls your name, He will make you listen. And, by the way, it’s too hard or I don’t know how, are not good excuses.
Take this book for example. The idea of writing Miracles Happen, seemed ridiculous at first. The idea came to me at a time when my life was in shambles. I escaped the chaos by hiking daily in the Rocky Mountains. Hiking is not only good for the body and mind, but it is also wonderful for the soul. It is my time alone with God. It was in the mountains that the Lord told me to write a book about prayer. “Lord,” I argued, “there are so many books on prayer already. Besides, who am I to tell people how to pray? I’m not a pastor. I never went to seminary.” At least I’m in good company whenever I tell God what I can’t do; Moses and Jonah didn’t feel up to the task either.
However, the Lord persisted: “Write a book about how miracles happen when you pray.” My rebellious spirit thought, That’s a good one. My life is a mess. I’m the last person to write a book on how miracles happen when you pray.
Oddly, as I began to throw up barriers, I also began to see that my entire life was a testimony to the power of prayer. My walk with the Lord was a faith walk as explained in Hebrews 11:1 (NASB): “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” In my Christian life, if I walked by sight alone, I would have given up. How comforting that troubles last only for the moment, but “joy comes in the morning” (see Psalm 30:5).The Holy Spirit gave me joy and peace while writing this book. Even when my circumstances deteriorate, I have peace. I am able to withstand the storms. I have never given up on the Lord Jesus Christ even during my tantrums. Whenever I wait on the Lord, I like to say, “My miracle has already left heaven; it just hasn’t reached earth yet.” No matter what happens in my life, I am always expectant. I know the rainbow always comes.
This book is intended for desperate people who have reached the end of their rope and are willing to try anything. You may already have found that the doctors can’t cure you, the psychics were wrong, the stars made you even more confused, crystals didn’t pulsate in your hands, and the shamans, channelers, and kahunas told you things you didn’t understand. Perhaps many of you were raised in Christian homes but felt that Christianity missed the mark. You’ve tried every cure for your physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments but have still come up empty.
If you are hesitant because this is a Christian book, let me tell you that if someone had told me when I was in my twenties that I would become a born-again Christian, I would have laughed. I despised the religious fanaticism and condemnation I thought I saw in the Christianity of my childhood. During my quest to find myself, I studied, among other religions, Buddhism, Islam, Jehovah’s Witness, and Latter Day Saints. I had the honor of being kicked out of EST and Silva Mind Control for poisoning the would-be converts with my cynicism. I was told that I was incapable of making it.
It was only when I got into the Word--the Bible--at age thirty-six and began to examine it for its historical accuracy and prophecies that I began to understand the truth about Christianity. To my surprise, it wasn’t about condemnation. The Bible says, “…there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, NASB). True Christianity is about the power of love and the simple majesty of forgiveness that brings healing to our lives. This is the kingdom within that pastors often talk about. It is the power of the Holy Spirit that enables us to do “all things through Christ which strengtheneth us” (Philippians 4:13, KJV). We have always had the power’ we need to learn how to tap into the power source by entering into the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ.
The gospel, or good news, of Jesus Christ is simple in comparison to organized religion. Interestingly, religion is a Greek word meaning “to bind.” People mess up the simplicity of the gospel with rules so burdensome that some Christians resemble the religious fanatics who condemned our Lord to the cross. The gospel of Jesus is that He loves us and we are forgiven all of our sins through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. All you have to do is accept His love and enter into the circle of His love. This is where you will find the Kingdom of God that has always been available to us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Many of us journey through life trying to find ourselves when the answer has always been right here within us.
Run to God, who never runs out of miracles or ideas. He never stops loving us because He is God, all by Himself.
The Holy Spirit, the Lord Jesus Christ, and God the Father author this book. All honor and glory to the Holy Trinity! Thank You, Lord, for the gifts and calling of God that are without repentance. Amen.
