An ironic view of death.

Michele Plunkett

Nick sits in his bath tub with warm wet stinging tears streaming down his young blushed face. He lazily has one hand holding up his blonde curly head of hair. His eyes are so swollen that they feel like they are explode. He is so consumed by a series of burdens and emotional weights of agony. He looks down at his sharp peutered razor in a contemplative manner. Events of the past replayed in his head like an bad episode of shows that no one wants to watch, making him feel dizzy. Nick began to massage his temples to alleviate his inner pain. Poor Nicks' girlfriend just left him, which he has sworn his undying love to. When she left, she only left behind a note. "Dear Nick, I am sorry this is short notice, but I must go. I have not been happy and feel as if we are going know where in life. Your lack of control of your own life has caused me to lose respect in you as a man. I am sorry; I have been feeling this way for a while. Sincerely Kim" When Kim left, she took everything. She took everything of value that he paid for and took a chunk of money from his bank account. She carelessly left the screen door open which is the cause of the loss of his late beloved dog spike. The results of her taking everything from him resulted in most of his checks bouncing on bills and late fees bringing his accounts in the negative and a note of foreclosure on his house. Needless to say he was in a rut brought on by a sneak attack from what he learned to be his most damaging enemy, his girlfriend. His depression has left him with the decision to end his life and escape the burdens of his outer demons.

Nick sighs in inner torment and begins to attempt, with a heavy arm to make his first deep cut into his wrist.

The blade is so dull it won't even cut or even scrape away skin. Nick became even more disgusted with his bad luck. Then a man says "I am sorry kid, it is just not your time." Nick body jerks back in shock while his head quickly turns in the direction of an Italian mafia looking man with slicked back hair, a lovely bronze tan, dressed in a black suit and tie. "Who –who are you?" Nick questions in a shaky voice. The suave male smiles and walks closer to Nicks tub and sit on the toilet right next to it. "I am the reaper, but you can call me Pauli." He says in an introductive manner. "Whatever dude, you're crazy, what the hell are you doing in my house?!" Nick excitedly yells. He then asserts himself in the bath tub. "Look Nick, I have a person who has an appointment with death in about fifteen minutes. The god, Father, whom lives upstairs, has decided to change the death policy for people in your region. Death only comes by appointment, and no one breaks the appointment." Says the Reaper in a explaining voice. "Wha" Nick goes to speak but is interrupted by Pauli looking at his watch that is now beeping and he says "I will see you in a few." He then snaps his fingers and disappears from the toilet. Nick sits in shock at what transpired, but then he realized his bath is getting cold. He pulls the plug out the drain, and gets out the tub putting a towel around him. He begins to believe he has lost his mind after the magical appearance and disappearance of Pauli. He looks in the steamed mirror of the medicine cabinet above his sink. He takes his hand and wipes it revealing a glary view of his face. He stares at himself and rubs his tender face feeling the slight stubble and then breaks down in hot burning tears again. His emotions stole his breathe away as he struggles to inhale and exhale with ever tear. He then sighs "why Kim?" to himself. He then opens his mirrored medicine cabinet. He sees a full bottle of pills. He takes the pill bottle into his hands. He looks at it for a bit. It reads "Xanax'" The prescription is to Kim. He opens and takes the entire bottle. He then looks himself back in the mirror. In his reflection Pauli stands behind him with a smirk. Nick immediately jerks his body around again toward the reaper. "What the hell do you want!!" screams Nick in anger and fear at the same time. "What did I tell you before?" Say Pauli amused. "It is simply not your time yet" Pauli explains. "Well, I made it my time… Nick waves the pill bottle in front of Pauli. "Nick, I am shocked at you." Said Pauli. He then claps his hands "Bravo, for the most stupid attempt of suicide" say Pauli laughing loudly. "I am going to die, whether you like it or not. I have the power over my own death." cries Nick. "Well, Nick, it is going to be a long wait for you, I mean taking children's Tylenol and all." Pauli snickers out loud. Nick looks at the bottle and read "children Tylenol" after he read before taking the pills "xanax." He begins to sob and the drops the empty bottle on the floor and exclaims "Dude, what do you want from me, don't you have something better to do." Pauli then smiles "I just want you to know that it is not your time yet." The alarm goes off on his watch and Pauli quickly turns it off. "I got to go; I will be seeing you later." Pauli says before disappearing again. Nick becomes angry with the fact that he can not successfully end his own life. His face was fiery red with determination against the reaper. So he goes out and finds a gun shop. He buys a gun and bullets and weapon cleaning material. He finds a secluded place in a park where he carefully cleans the gun and loads it. "Finally" he says. "No one can stop a bullet" He thought to himself. He slowly raises the gun to his temple. He stares off in the distance. There is a cool and peaceful breeze blowing through his hair. He gently and slowly closes his eyes. His finger is on the trigger and slowly tugs at it. "Click" goes the gun. The gun is jammed and broken. "Forget this!!!" Nick yells in anger and throws the gun. He gets up in anger and stomps off like an elephant. He then puts his hands in his pocket toward the exit of the park. He kept his eyes to the ground. His mind is racing with angry thoughts as he walks. He barges through a few people without looking at them. He could hear them cursing at him. Then he bumps into a young woman and she falls down to the ground. Nick finally stops his charging walk and looks at her. Time began to stand still as he watched her shyly gather her things without saying a word. He goes to help her with her things. "I am sorry miss." He replies while her hair of honey brown fell like a slow moving waterfall over her shoulders. She looks at him with her eyes sparkling like diamonds surprised. "That is ok, I wasn't looking were I was going." She explains while picking her things off the ground. He hands her the rest of her things, while looking at the curves of her perfect face before looking her in her big beautiful sparkling eyes. Her hair flows dark and wavy in the wind. He then quickly stammers on his words "W-would you like to have a cup of coffee with me? Wait, I am sorry my name is Nick. "He extends his hand. She looks him over and smile taking his hand in handshake and then responds "I would love to have coffee with you, and I know just the place. By the way my name is Heather" Nick heart starts beating fast in nervousness. She became aware of his discomfort. She grabs him by the hand and tugs "Come on silly" she request. He looks at her while starting to follow. The end of the day is starting off perfect with a change of luck for the unfortunate Nick. Her beauty is so radiant that it was as if she cast a spell on him. They began to have a conversation about his life and hers. She sympathized with his issues and he sympathized with hers. He dared not bring up his encounter with the reaper Pauli. He feared that experience would scare her off. In such a short period of time that is so everlasting, Nick has finally made a connection with someone. Finally, Nick sees the coffee shop across the street from where they were. Each moment with her was like a small piece of heaven. Once again his life seemed worth living. The light turned red enabling them to cross the street in the direction of the coffee house. They begin to walk across. In the middle of their crossing of the street Nick spots Pauli on the other side smiling. Nick is so grateful that Pauli saved his life as he looks back at him. Nick gives him a wave of hello. Nick feels like he is walking on clouds. Pauli begins to laugh hysterically and then raises his watch for the time. Nick is mouthing "thank you" to Pauli when suddenly, Heather jerks out the way of a high speed car not obeying the red light. Her behavior caught Nicks attention to the car heading for him. It is too late for him to move out its way. It made impact with his body sending him rolling over the car hood to the back and finally he hits the ground with a bone crushing thud. His blood is all over the ground and he can hear crowds of people surrounding him. He opens his eyes and said "I am ok" and then he gets up. He began to walk toward Heather who is still looking down at the ground like everyone else is. He became confused and turned around. He looked in shock at his body contorted in different anatomically incorrect directions. Blood is streaming out every area of his body. Nick begins to walk backwards not bumping into people but through them. He then finally bumps into somebody. He turns around and sees Pauli smiling. Nick stares at him in shock at first then immediately became angry. "I thought you said it wasn't my time!!!" Nick yells in teared anger. "It wasn't your time at noon, while you were in the bathtub, nor when you took the children Tylenol. It was your Time at approximately 5:15 pm" Pauli explains snickering. Nicks mouth dropped.
