Boomer: A Pomeranian's Heartbreaking Story. (Part Three)

Boomer-the-Pomeranian has been making strides in his recovery from neglect and abuse, but he will probably never be adopted out as a pet, which saddens the staff, who has come to love him as if he were their very own.

I wish we could tell you that Boomer, the Pomeranian dog we have been working with, has been adopted into a loving family, but that isn't the case.  It has been over three months since I wrote last time.  Boomer is still with us: we just couldn't find it in our hearts to euthanize Boomer: we've all fallen in love with him.

Boomer's fur has grown back, but it's rather uneven in spots, especially about the face and neck, where he had been burned.  He looks rather lopsided.  Yet the fur around his back and especially his powderpuff tail that he holds proudly upon his back has grown in thick and sure.  It is still that beautiful creamy-white color.

He is loving and receptive around us, but he still barks at strangers, particularly men.  He just does not like men at all.  Guess it was because whoever had him last before he came to us was a man and he treated him very badly.  So he has it imprinted on his keen little mind that all men (even those who have tried to help him on his road to recovery) are no good.

As I said before, I wish I could take the little dog in, but Spike, my cat, would probably try to eat him.  He's a lot bigger than this little guy; it would not be a very good idea!

Boomer will probably end up staying with us here at the shelter for the long run.  We plan on making him our mascot, to show what good, loving TLC can do to an animal if treated promptly and correctly.  It is a miracle that Boomer even survived being burned and/or abused like he did.

I just hope his future is a lot kinder to him than the past months to a year have been ...  only time can  heal  his wounds, both physically and emotionally/mentally.  We will just have to learn to take it one day at a time.

~To be continued.~

It's always amazing to me that someone could abuse a defenseless animal, or person. On the one hand, a very sad story, Karen. On the other hand, because there are good people, a very uplifting story.

So sad, and so many of them out there right now that have been so horrendously abandoned and abused.

I had planned to find abused, emaciated old Trucker a new home, but he's now stuck to me, like glue, and he's still extremely fearful of other human beings.
