My son, Bryce Michael, is no longer a little boy, but he will always remain my baby. You know how it is with mothers and their children: they want to keep them little forever, but you and I know that is impossible.
Kids grow up. It's only natural.
Bryce has always been something of a hero in my eyes. He's battled with chronic bronchial asthma all his life, but now that he finally has that under control, he is doing much better. Imagine my surprise a few months ago when Bryce announced that he wanted to enlist into the United States Marines!
I was afraid they wouldn't take him because of his past health history, but his health has been stable enough that it isn't no longer a huge worry. He takes meticulously good care of himself. He eats right and gets the proper amount of exercise and rest; he also checks his breathing constantly. He knows what gives him the most trouble, so he tries his best to avoid those things that set his asthma off. He has his trusty companion -- his asthma inhaler -- with him at all times.
Well, Bryce left to go to basic training about a month ago, and he is having a wonderful time (or so he tells me). Bryce e-mails me just about every day; there is no telling where he will go after basic is over, but I am sure he will remain stateside (or at least I am hoping he does ... ). If he were to go to the boiling pots of the world, I don't know what I would do except pray like crazy for God to protect my boy!
I always tell people my son has been at war for years; he's used to fighting and constantly being on guard. He has the experience and know how to deal with sticky, unexpected situations.
I do know this much: I cannot wait to see him in his Marine uniform! There is something about a person dressed in a Marine uniform that gets the old heart to twitchin'! :) I hope he sends a picture soon; I would really love to see him in his uniform!
Besides Bryce, we have a daughter, Moriah Dawn, who is 16 and in high school. A junior this year. I don't know if she will follow in her older brother's footsteps; she seems to be dropping hints that she might. Right now, though, school is of the utmost importance to her and like Bryce, I want to keep her little (six years old, perhaps) forever and ever!
