Kimmirut, Nunavut, Canada, March 2012~
Hello! It is me, Auuniq Titaquaalaq from the Artic region of northernmost Canada!
I am sorry if I haven't written in a while. School, helping Father and my two older brothers, and playing with my brothers (and friends) keeps me pretty busy. I do hope you understand.
Life is good here. Busy tending to the dogs and traps and making a pretty good haul this winter (fish, seal, elk). Mother Nature and the spirits have been good to us; we have had plenty to eat.
I pray this continues. And I pray that the nanuqs (polar bears) don't raid our catch like they did last year. They did it twice and we didn't have nearly as much food as we normally do. I was afraid we were going to starve, but the spirits, they took care of us.
I am still hanging around with Timmy Quiqsaq, Toby Evans, Uumaaqsuaak Charlie, Randy Tutaniq, and our newest friend, Gabriel Dory, playing stick ball, kick ball, futball, and baseball with them after school ... that, or we play video games if the weather is really nasty or colder than normal for this area. Or we watch the northern lights and pray to the light spirits to keep us safe.
I am in fourth grade now. I still have Mme. Roubedeaux; she used to teach second grade, but she teaches fourth grade now. I love her; she is a good teacher. And it's nice to have someone I know to teach me.
It is much nicer than having a complete stranger.
The northern lights have been very busy in our northern skies. The sun has been very active with sunspots, which cause storms, which, in kind, causes the northern lights. They are wonderful to watch, but they mess up the computer and radio signals, and sometimes if they're strong enough, they'll make the power go out and then we can't do anything 'til the power comes back on. It's a pain!
We saw some amazing lights last night. They were purple, pink, aqua, and white, and it got so bright sometimes it was almost like the sun was back out. It was incredible!
Well, I have to get to my next class, so I will go. I will write in here again soon. Until then, this is Auuniq Titaquaalaq saying bye!
