A girl from India shares her story.

Greetings!  My name is Neela Ashwani.  I am 10 years old.  I live in India; I live in a very big city by the name of Punjab.  I live with my mum, my Daddy, my three little brothers (Ashram, Davan, and Vishnaj) and my big sister, Ashanti.

I am Hindi.

I am in Grade Four at primary school; I go whenever the weather is not bad or when I don't have too much to do here at home (which I usually do, as I take care of my brothers until Mummy or Daddy get up; if they are sick, I stay home all day).  I walk to school; school is about ten minutes away from my home.

I go with my Daddy because there are tigers in the woods near our place; I am scared I will get eaten up.  I don't like tigers; they frighten me.

I love school, but I wish I could go more than I do.  I love learning new things.  This was how I learned English and how to write in it, but I can write in Hindi, too, and speak it as well.  I am very smart, or so my parents have told me.  Whenever they tell me this, I feel very proud.

I guess I am still here because I pray to the gods to protect me and keep me safe.  I also get scared of the elephants; they are so large and scary looking with their great, white tusks and massive bodies.  When they trumpet or charge at someone, their cries sound like thunder to my ears.  I don't like elephants.  Never have.

When I get big, I want to be a teacher or an actress.  Mummy and Daddy both say I sing like a Bollywood star or one of those stars in Hollywood, USA.

Well, it is time to go.  I must go to my next class, which is Music.  I hope you liked reading about me.  I enjoyed writing my story.  Take care and may the gods watch over you and keep you well!

~Love, your new friend in India, Neela.  :)
