This is the story of a girl who has been in and out of my life for years.

I have known you since you were in your Mothers womb. You mother was just barely 16, when she had you.Your Mom brought you up in a baby carrier, when you were 4 months old. She worked at local jobs trying to support you but, at $6.00 an hour it was hard to keep food on the table. You were a pretty little girl with light brown hair and blue eyes. The neighborhood boys loved you at first sight. Your beautiful smile could melt a mountain. Your mother (July) had party problems though and left you with Mary, Gary and their three boys a lot. You stayed in our home a few times and went to church with us. Your Mom felt helpless. She moved from guy to guy, carrying you with her. Everytime there was food in the house, clothes on your back and power in the house, your Mom was living with another man. You grew up seeing this.
Last year I saw you again. By this time you were 12 years old. You told everyone that you were 14 years old. I knew better. Janie spent the night at our house and she told me that she lives with her grandmother now. She sleeps on her grandmothers couch. Janie only see's her Mom July one Saturday out of two weeks. Janie failed 6th grade but, has finally made it to the 7th grade now. Janie states, "I want to be like my Mom." She says, "I want a belly button ring." July says, "She can't handle Janie." July says that, "Janie doesn't listen to her." July has put Janie on birth control pills at 13 years old. Janie told me that she had to sleep with guys or they would not like her. I explained to her that, if a guy really liked her, then he would not ask her to sleep with him.
When Janie was 15 years old, I went to a Mother Daughter banquet. I asked her, if she would like to go with me? I heard the excitement in her voice, as she said,"Yes!" I took her shopping before the banquet. She had never been to a banquet like that before. She got her food and sat down. It was a pleasure to have her with me. At the end of the night I introduced Janie, as one of my many children. Then, I heard Janie say,"Now you know I mean more to you than that Debbie."
Yes, Janie. You mean more that that to me. I will always love you Janie. Janie still comes by at times to see me. I enjoy the time we spend together.
