A Short Story by Shelley Walden

Pandora’s Box
A sliver of glimmering light instantly mesmerizes a passerby. Captivated by the source, intrigue takes precedence and the unassuming individual approaches. After moments of surmising the bewitching character, the enigma only deepens. Infatuation escalates and challenges all reason. The undisguised charisma beckons the unaware soul into a sense of false security. All caution is thrown to the wind as the giving heart quickly becomes invested. But behind the façade lies a blackened core, void of emotion. Reciprocity is not feasible. Impending doom is inevitable.
The tangled web encloses naiveté in a blinding cloak of deception. This illusion brings forth faith and caring in one, while the other waits for the perfect opportunity to latch on with poisonous fangs. Before giving a second thought, the gullible one falls prey to the diabolical plan as a seed is planted. In nine months time a sweet innocent soul is born of this union. Now deeply entangled, the maternal one becomes hostage to the dark soul’s deeply hidden rage. The vulnerable being is rendered immobile, withering in fear as all control is lost. Only wishing to shield the precious bundle, countless acts of degradation are suffered. No longer paramount in keeping the hostage under control, deceit is cast aside and the truth is used as another form of punishment.
Substances taint the twisted mind even more. With every last ounce of strength, a desperate hand tries to contain the darkness. There is a struggle of wills as the foreboding forces gain control. The maternal one withers in defeat. Pain of unimaginable depths overshadows all that is good. Pleas to remove the tiny one to safety are lost in the violent chaos. A humbled heap lays motionless as the dark victor once again reigns supreme. An evil laugh rises above the cries of despair.
Gaining insight, the maternal one shows loyalty until a move can be made towards freedom.   Abiding by all the rules, the painful grasp is lessened.   A long awaited opportunity makes a narrow escape possible. With the restraints vanished, a deep breath is taken and the world becomes crystal clear. Distance is of the utmost importance as a safe refuge is sought. The little one is finally given the chance to flourish. Relishing in the security of the new surroundings, defenses are slowly lowered.
As if instinctually sensing this, the dark one seizes the opportunity to pounce. Without a moment’s notice, the unsuspecting being is brought back into the folds of evil. Protesting screams are lost in the retribution.
The helpless soul surrenders to the surreal grips of delusion once again. Maybe this is fate, how life is supposed to be. Falling into acceptance, self-sacrifice resurfaces and instinct is ignored. Procuring safety for the innocent babe, all else seems insignificant. The defenseless falls prey to the dark captor’s ruthless behavior.   Even breathing out of turn seems to bring forth ire and it becomes apparent that it is pointless to continue this charade. There is no pleasing one that doesn’t possess a soul. Wiser, the flight attempt is deliberated cautiously. Success is achieved and the healing process begins once again. As each month passes by, thriving accelerates and a significantly brighter future is within grasp.
During this much needed reprieve, the shadows hide the dark looming force. An ever watchful eye keeps watch on the unsuspecting one and the angelic tot. Man’s laws are about to be used in a final attempt to demand obedience.   Without warning, hard earned happiness is admonished in an instant. Man’s laws are twisted in irony. A hypnotic spell engulfs the judicial process as the dark one unleashes a barrage of lies and deceit.  Blinded, the court system believes each accusation. Accountability is seriously misplaced and orders are made to place the defenseless, little one in the dark soul’s custody. The resulting devastation threatens destroy the maternal being. With life hanging in the balance, survival instincts take over. A new perseverance takes hold and the battle of good versus evil rages.  Undeniable truth eventually gains the upper hand and victory is finally within view. Losing control, the spell abates and the blackened core finally reveals itself. No longer able to deny the evil one’s true intent, the courts snap back to reality. At last the dark admits defeat and becomes lost in the shadows of its former prison, hopefully never to be seen again.
