  • Radioactive contamination.
  • Loss in transit of nuclear asset with or without its carrying vehicle.

Tactical Nuclear Weapons:
{low yield warheads including land mines, depth charges, torpedoes,
demolition munitions and artillery shells.}
Oktoberfest is my favorite time of year. My Frühstück consisted of a liter of Double Boch and an order of Pom Fritz.
I had just woke up in my room at the Gasthaus I stayed at, when I got a call from the Abrams Complex in Frankfurt. The number two guy at the D.I.A.'s Directorate for Human Intelligence Wanted to see me. The last thing I wanted to do on a Saturday morning in October was sit in my Captain's office. Sucks being me!
Don't get me wrong, my Captain was one of the coolest guys I've ever worked for (he didn't even get mad when we put a "Larry Flint" for president bumper sticker on his car!).
But the HUMINT guy was a civilian, who didn't understand the local culture let alone the economy. And he damn sure didn't understand that we had been paying informants from the profits of our hash sales. Oh, we didn't sell it ourselves. No. We had three guys who were in Germany on student visas doing it for us.
Two trips to Amsterdam a week, the exchange rate was 3.5 DM per dollar. Hash cost 3 DM a gram and our guys were selling it for around 15! A hundred dollar bill to the border guards and you're on your way.
Our dealing trio: Edi, Ali and Bubba (not his real name because I couldn't pronounce it!) spoke German, French, English and whatever their native language was in Africa. They took all the risks, they knew the opium and hash trade rather well, were smart as hell, college students and ran a lot of our informants. They were unlikely allies in our counter-intelligence fight.
Getting back to the day's events, Captain Richards (who was a linguist) looked like someone had just punched him in the stomach. The guy, a Mr. Hearst showed his credentials so fast I thought I was at the Pentagon! Hearst was one of those Intel weenies who really needed to get out from behind his desk more often. And he loved telling service personnel what to do. If he had no problem frightening my boss then you know he wouldn't hesitate to bring heat down on a warrant officer who never had to wear a uniform! I did shave and comb my hair though, can't have the pretty ladies in Frankfurt thinking I'm a goober!
Anyway, Hearst hands me a folder with the one word on it that could take the breath away from anybody, enlisted, officer, civilian, hell even the President!
Broken Arrow
The $1,020.30/month I was getting wasn't enough to prepare me for this! But I remembered my M.I. Creed:
I am a Soldier first, but an intelligence professional second to none.
So I read on, because I was a TS/SCI-cleared individual that had successfully completed
a counterintelligence (CI) or full-scope polygraph and a special Background Investigation with HUMINT Control System compartment clearance (try saying that three times fast).
MILPER MESSAGE NUMBER : 84-1339
ATTN: AC-G-FK--MI
CC: ATZS--MI
NOTIFICATION OF ASSIGNMENT (NOFA) (HUMAN INTELLIGENCE) (COUNTERINTELLIGENCE)
Issued: [10/04/1984]...
A. UNIT STATUS REPORTING
B. ASSIGNMENTS
C. UTILIZATION MANAGEMENT
EACH UNIT WILL REPORT STATUS ON Broken Arrow LEADS (HUMINT)
EACH COMMANDER WILL ASSIGN PERSONNEL PER THEIR MOS
AR 381-20, U.S. ARMY COUNTERINTELLIGENCE ACTIVITIES
More assets will be moved into theater of operations in one week.
1. THIS MILPER MESSAGE WILL EXPIRE NLT 7 OCT 1984.
CI TM:
PERSONNEL: 6
1 X Counter-Intelligence Warrant Officer
1 X 97B3L - Counter-Intelligence
4 X 97B10 - Counter-Intelligence
FOLLOWS: POSSIBLE BROKEN ARROW AT "SAM'S" HOUSE
REPORT FOLLOWS IN SECURE POUCH.
So basically my team and I had one week to operate before the hammer came down. No pressure!
Technically speaking we had no clear ordinary chain of command.
Granted there were other teams, but we were the ones who got the tough ones. Just read AR 381-47(S), lots of laughs!
In all the simulations that were run in the European theater we played the red team (bad guys), so I guess they figured we should know!
We were looking for a tactical nuclear artillery round.
