The Angel

Sometimes angels are sent to help us when we least expect it. A short story

The Angel

“Bah! Humbug! Christmas Day,”he said

A tear in his eye as he turned away.

What was there for him to be happy for

On this cold and wintry day

Carolers singing as they walked down the lane

Songs of Christmas a joyous refrain

Heavy in heart he watched as they went out of sight

Happiness eluding him on this holy night

All he had was memories from Christmas past

Unhappy ones full of abuse each worse than the last

There was no Merry Christmas when he was young

He never really felt that he ever truly belonged

Parents that did drugs and drank themselves into a stupor

Beat their kids and sent them to bed without supper

Nightmares have tortured him all of his life

Never any happy moments because of all the strife

“Bah! Humbug!” he thought again as he walked down the street

When he was young there were no special treats.

And then a lonely child came into his view

As he listened, the child said, ”Bah! Humbug!” for Christmas too.

He stopped and looked at this tattered and crying child

For he knew what he was going through

This was him as a boy sitting on those stairs

Dirty and cold so unhappy because no one cared

With a saddened heart he sat next to that child

Remembering days of his youth and asked him. ”What

can I do to help you?”

Tears flowing from his eyes the child said, “There is

nothing that you can do.”

“I am all alone for no one really cares, my parents

are drunk and drugged sleeping upstairs.”

“No Christmas tree or gifts. No holiday cheer.

They both are passed out from drinking beer.

So another Christmas will come and go

Bah! Humbug is all I know.”

He looked at this small child remembering years ago

Torment he had suffered  brought tears of release

His heart said it was time to let it go

He gently took the child in his arms and hugged him tight

Both of them releasing their anger on this holy night

“Come on kid, lets you and I go to town

look at all the decorations as we walk around”

As they walked and talked a wonderful feeling

Came into his heart and opened his soul

This child’s small hand began to glow

His body changed from a child into an angel

The man stopped walking and just stared

Here before him was someone who cared

“I am your guardian angel sent from above

from Jesus to let you know you are loved.

Things happen in our life we can not control

But in your heart you must learn to let them go.

For Jesus is always standing by your side

Your grief from Him you can not hide.

When you cry he is there to wipe away your tears

He has been doing that for you all these years.

When you are sad he takes you into his arms and

Hugs you tight

Keeping the nightmares away during the night

When you feel that your life is through

He will send an angel to help you

That is why I am here tonight to let you know

There are those who do care and will never let you go”

The angel slowly disappeared into the night

Leaving the man full of Jesus spirit and love

Soooo captivating and feel good right to remind us as the months fly by quicker and quicker towards Christmas that miracles can and do happen but often we may be the ones who need to open the door for them. Well done Kathy.

A heart warming story, Kathy Lynn. I don't know where I'd be today if angels had not looked after me throughout some pretty scary times. Thank you for sharing. Love and blessings to you,

Regis
