An Accident of Love
By Nia Rose
Friday, August 22, 2003

Characters:
Niani_Rose: A twenty-five year old ambitious, studious, inexperienced virgin.
Tasha James: Niani's best friend
Stanley Reed: Niani's man

NIANI: Yo Tasha, today was definitely a strange day; even though my body was physically located in the heart of my grandmother's apartment my mind was definitely elsewhere. The majority of my brainpower was spent pondering over my relationship with Stanley. And the remainder of my thoughts was divided between the rigorous challenges I'll be facing in graduate school,my dying grandmother, getting into Harvard's PhD. history program, and the rigors of attaining a tenured professorship after my doctoral studies.

TASHA: Damn girl, you sure have a lot to deal with. I know it's hard right now, but you can't let it stress you out. What's up with this guy Stanley? Do you have feelings for him or what?

NIANI: Girl, you know ever since my junior year in college my greatest aspiration has been to become the first advanced scholar in my immediate family. More specifically, I have vividly dreamt of obtaining my PhD. from Harvard University, becoming a distinguished historian with a number of works under my belt, and becoming a tenured professor at an accredited university before I turn thirty-five.

TASHA: I know, I know, but you didn't answer my question about this cat Stanley? Do you have feelings for him or what?

NIANI: Yes, I have feelings for him, but I 'm trying so hard not to.

TASHA: Why? If you have a connection with him you should see where it takes you. Why are you so afraid to love someone?

NIANI: For your info I'm not afraid of love, it's just that I can't get involved right now because I have to focus completely on obtaining my goals.

TASHA: Niani, you are my girl, but that is crap. I have known you for eleven years and in that period of time you have only had one boyfriend; and that was when you was nineteen. During college, I understood that you didn't want to lose sight of getting your bachelor's degree so you abstained from having a man; but you are twenty-five
years old now and you're still a virgin. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying being a virgin is a bad thing, but you are definitely in the minority. Listen I'm not saying give up your dreams, but damn girl live a little. He just might be the one, give him a chance.

NIANI: It is not crap! I don't want to be distracted; I refuse to be messed up. You know how many of our friends have never finished college because they ended up becoming pregnant or worse. Damn Tash, why are you trying to make me feel bad for being a virgin? You trying to say I'm less than a woman or something? That's exactly why I hate telling people that I';m a virgin. I can handle the ridicule I encounter from everyone else, but damn I didn't think I would get it from you too. Listen I like Stanley a lot I might even love him, but I'm not going to fuck him just because he's fine as hell and flush my dreams down the toilet. That's not the type of woman that I am. I never have been and never will be. That might be your style, but it's not mine.

TASHA: Niani, you know I would never make fun of you because you're a virgin. I'm just saying that you're getting older and I don't want you to miss out on something because you think you might threaten your dreams. Youcan have a man and a career too, you know. Incidentally, is he really that fine?

NIANI: Girl, you have no idea. I guess you can say Stanely is the ideal man. He's charming, intelligent, ambitious, and sexy as hell. Girl, he has an incredible body. Stanley has the type of body that makes a woman want to, never mind.

TASHA: Oh hells no! Say what you were going to say. That's not even right and you know it.

NIANI: Nah, I don't want to talk about him like that, damn tasha he's not apiece of meat you know. And plus he's my baby and those thoughts are private.

TASHA: Oh yeah, now all of a sudden he's your baby, huh? You know you are not even right. What's up with you guys anyway, how did you all meet?

NIANI: Girl, it was truly an accident of love, here's how the situation unfolded. One late afternoon, after a long tumultuous day I boarded the uptown A train at Chambers Street. When the train reached 14th Street I finally got a seat and after about five minutes of debating whether to get off at 59th street and catch the local C train or just ride the A train up to 125th street I nodded off. When I finally looked up the train had just passed by 96th street. I was like damn I missed my opportunity to get off at 59th street and catch the local C train. When the train finally reached 125th street I dragged myself off the train and headed toward the stairs. It was then that I noticed this guy in the fabulous suit. Yo Tash, I swear this suit was really off the hook. Anyway, I thought damn I didn't get anything for my dad for Father's Day and maybe a suit would be the perfect gift.

TASHA: Niani, you are so crazy. How could you be worrying about your father at a time like that?

NIANI: I know, I know, Anyway, he looked at me and I looked at him and the next thing I knew it was on.

TASHA: OOH girl, on like popcorn. What happened next?

NIANI: I swear you don't have any sense. Anyway, after walking up about a thousand stairs I finally approached the turnstile. As I turned to shuffle my belongings so that I could fit through I noticed someone standing next to me. Girl, guess who it was?

TASHA: Let me guess, Stanely right?

NIANI: Yep, girl I could not believe how fast he got up those stairs. His eagerness was really uplifting not to mention humorous. Anyway, when he finally mustered up enough courage to speak to me he said, "Are you a college student?" I replied, "no." He then asked, "Oh you're in high school?" He then said, " Let me start over my name is Stanley Reed and I ..." I then informed him that I was actually an instructer at a local college and a soon to be graduate student. We started to talk further and he asked if he could get my number. Now you normally I would give him a fake number, but I swear I was so tired that I could not think of a number on the spot. Even though he apeared to be a nice guy I just didn't feel like being bothered. You know every now and again a woman just wants to be left alone and free from come ons.
TASHA: I was just getting ready to say I'm surprised you gave him your number. What happened when you guys first went out?
NIANI: Well we had decided to hang out and go to the movies, but I wasn't looking forward to it.
TASHA: Why?
NIANI: Because I didn't want him to know that I hadn't been on a date in over six years and I didn't know how to act. Girl, I swear I was so damn nervous I didn't know what to do.
TASHA: Well obviously you did something right. I mean since you guys are together.
NIANI: Yeah, the date was great. It went well right from the beginning. I mean except for my parents embarrassing the hell out of me. They followed me when I went to meet him.
TASHA: Oh no they didn't.
NIANI: Oh yes they did. Anyway, when I got downstairs he was sitting in his car waiting for me. I waved for him to get out and when he did I felt my heart drop. I could not believe this was the same guy I had initially wanted to leave me alone. I know that I must have really been tired that day. All I kept thinking was thank God I was too tired that day to give him a fake number. When he approached my building he shook my dad's hand and introduced himself to both my parents. I think my parents were also really impressed. Tasha, I cannot front he definitely had it going on. He was tall, dark, and handsome. He was definitely a MAN! He was an older distinguished gentleman whose vast experience could only complement my inexperience. Oh girl, his body looked incredible. I just could not stop staring at it. He wore a shirt that looked as if it were designed exclusively for him, and his jeans complimented his every move. Oh God, his walk made me want him more than anything else. He walked with a strength that comes along with a built like his. I can't front I was open.
TASHA: It sounds like your nose is still mad open. So what happened during the movie? Did he try anything? Does he know you're a virgin or does he think you're a real woman?
NIANI: First of all, I am a real woman. Just because I haven't had sex yet doesn't mean I'm not a woman. And FYI, he knows about it and he doesn't mind. As far as our date he was a perfect gentleman the whole time. We went to go see Legally Blond 2, and as much as I had wanted to see that movie I only ended up watching about fifteen minutes of it. I was so busy staring at him I missed most of the movie. During the movie he kept massaging my hand and all I could do was imagine him doing more.
TASHA: So what's up with you guys now? Is he the one or what?
NIANI: I honestly don't know. I have to admit my lack of experience makes me feel a little stupid when it comes to men. I really want to love him, but I don't know how to let my guard down and just give in.
TASHA: Niani you're not stupid, just inexperienced. You really need to stop being so pathologically obsessed about your future. It's cool that you're determined to become a successful historian/professor before you turn thirty-five, but it would be extremely tragic if by tirty-five you still have never experienced love.
NIANI: Tasha, it's easier said than done. What if he wants to just take advantage of me like the rest of these guys? What if he doesn't really love me? What if I give him everything and he doesn't care?
TASHA: Niani, the first thing you must learn about love is that there are no what-ifs? You cannot allow something as precious as love to slip through your fingers, especially an Accident of Love!

I love the way you intermingled an underlying serious message with an unusual brand of humor. This story definitely does not seem like that of a first timer.

Nia, thanks for sharing this piece. I absolutely love the delivery, not to mention the overall message of the story. Truly a great piece I would have to agree with Dennis it doesn't seem like its your first short romantic piece.
