Anya's Journals: Beyond the Color of My Skin (Summer 1935)

Because of the color of my skin I am expected to talk differently, but Mamma says she isn't having any of that. On her side our family has been in the north since the days of slavery ending, and they have been given opportunities, she is not going to raise children who talk like they never learned any better. Those are her words not mine, I am simply repating them.

July.1935

Why does it happen to be that I am denied opportunities simply because I am black.  I do not like the southern ways, seperate bathrooms, seperate entertainment and if a colored man is seen with a white girl God forbid, they can be lynched strung up like common criminals.

I have the education I have only because Mamma and Daddy sent me north to make sure I did not have to go to one of those "Colored schools", with broken desks and no books to speak of.  She says no child should have to learn like that.  I agree with Mamma.

I am home now and the reality of the different worlds set in.  In California I could go to the picture show with my friends both colored and white and no one says a thing, but not so in Alabama.  I could be lynched for stepping foot in a white theatre.  It just isn't fair.

Mamma says one day perhaps the south will catch up with the rest of the country.  I hope that day comes in my lifetime. But truthfully I have my doubts.

Anya!

This is an apt description of 'the way it was'. Sadly there is much in our history that is shamful.

Wow, this is so good!! You have an awesome imagination, Michelle! Very good story, but so sad that blacks were treated so badly by the whites ... today some still are, sad to say ... :( Some people never learn ... :(

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Texas, Karen Lynn. :(
