A boy cherishes his favorite possession: a book. It's the only thing left after Martians attacked his village.

The only things left after the attack:  a book and myself.  It's a wonder I even survived.

I scan my surroundings and shake my head.  Everywhere I look is in ruins.  Not a tree, not a house, not even a person left.  It's like I'm the only living soul on the planet.

I am scared that it will happen again:  being attacked.  Martians attacked our planet, killing everything (and everyone) in their path.    It was brutal.  It was violent.  It was terrifying.  I will probably have nightmares about what I saw, heard, tasted, smelled, felt for a very long time to come.  That is, if I even survive the next go-around: there is no telling when (and if) the Martians will attack again ...

The only thing I have (besides my life, that is) is a book.  It belonged to my dad; it's the only tangible remainder I have to my family, so it's become very prcious to me.  He loved science fiction the best.

The book in question: "The War Of The Worlds".  How appropriate.  We were at war with an unseen enemy until they finally decided to show up and then, when they did ... total destruction.  It's safe to say that we did not win the war ....

I miss my family.  Dad and I were especially close.  I also had my mom (she was a wonderful cook; her fried chicken was to die for!) and my sister Chloe (15) and my kid brother, Ian (6).  I am 13, by the way; name's Jon-Marc.  And now I am the only one left, perhaps on the entire planet.  Not a sound, not even a hint of wind: just the smell of death and only god knows what else ...

I do know one thing:  I believe there's a heaven and a hell because right now we have lived through hell.  Still are.  Actually, I'm the one who is living in hell because I survived it and I do not like what I am seeing.

I will have to use my wits to find food or a place to call home.  Right now, I don't have anything but the clothes upon my back and dad's book.  That's it.  I don't have anything else.

All I can say is this: may god have mercy upon me; no, may he have mercy upon our shattered planet ....
