Once there was a tiny puppy. She was the littlest of her ten brother and
sister puppies and got the name of Small.
Did I say ten brother and sister puppies? Why yes, I did. But that wasn’t all.
Her brother and sister puppies were big and fat.
With thick bushy tails and silky fur coats that laid quite flat.
Small wasn’t pretty and had no silky coat.
Her tail was real scraggly like the beard on a goat.
Her brother and sister puppies were speedy and fast.
They’d always out run her, so she was always last.
She would always have to wait …and then wait some more.
While her brothers and sisters flashed by with a roar.
But, she loved her ten brother and sister puppies and loved them very much.
She loved to play games like chase the bushy tail, or tag or some touch.
She’d tug on their big ears and bite on their thick tails, always having fun.
Playing with each other, chasing, rolling or being on the run.
But what all the puppies wanted was a family of their own.
That’s a puppy dream you know-a family to love and a place to call home.
All the puppies had fun when the families came to play.
Each time a family came; puppies would hope and hope it would be their day-
to go with a family and stay.
But Small was never picked. She was skinny and scraggly with short little ears.
But was happy for her brothers and sisters, only hoping being picked wouldn’t take years.
As puppies found families, Small started to feel sad and alone.
She didn’t have her brothers or sisters to play with or a family of her own.
What puppies were left? A family came to ask.
Only Small was there, she was the last.
I hope they like me, she thought. I hope they play with me and take me home.
I hope they want me to be a part of their family and treat me with a bone.
She hoped, and hoped, and hoped and then waited with a smile.
Like she had always done, but with her heart hurting all the while.
And, you know what? They loved her the second they saw her. They played with her. They cuddled her. They kissed and hugged her. They held her tight in their arms and said…
You are just the puppy we’ve been looking for. We have hoped and hoped for a puppy, all of our own.
Thank you for waiting, and waiting for us. You will be a part of our family and a part of our home.
