A little African-American girl shares her story.

My name is Sweet Pea Jones.  I am 8 years old.  I live with my family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  I am in the third grade.

I have a mommy and daddy (I call them Mama and Daddy), and I have two brothers (one younger and one older); my brothers are named Scout Abraham and KeyShawn Patrick; Scout is the older one and KeyShawn is the younger brother.  They are 13 and six.

I don't have any sisters.

I love school.  My teacher's name is Mrs. Gaige; she is really nice.  She tells me how good I'm doing and if I have a problem, she is always willing to help me.  I just love her so much, almost as much as my own family!

My best friend's name is Amity Grace Johnson.  I have known her since pre-K (four years).  When we are not at school, we go to each other's houses on the weekends (Saturday mostly but sometimes on Sundays, if we don't have anything planned).  I love her because she sticks up for me if the kids tease me about my name.

I like to do many things: play with my dolls, play pretend with my little brother or with Amity, dance, sing, color, draw, write stories, collect angels, read my Bible and go to church (Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights), read, and go to the mall or to the movies.  I love to ride my bike, do gymnastics, and play badminton, as well as swim.  I am a very active little girl; I always have been.

When I grow up I would love to become a pediatrician.  I would love to help sick or injured children get well.  One time I was playing on the swingset when the swing broke.  I ended up breaking my arm.  When I went to the Emergency Room, Dr. Tanner took very good care of me and tried to make me feel a little better.  She said that I was very brave when they set my arm (THAT HURT!!) and put it in a cast.  The cast was purple.  I wore it for six weeks (it seemed like forever!!).  I was never so glad to get it off!!

I then had to do special exercises to help make my arm stronger.  That was a pain, but it helped.  And my arm didn't look so funny anymore.

That happened when I was six.  It really made a memory on my mind, so much, I decided to become a pediatrician, just like Dr. Tanner!

Well, I gotta go.  It's nearly time for lunch!  We are having lasagna, baked potatoes, salad, carrot sticks, and for dessert, a choice of a banana, apple, or orange.  Yum!! Good and healthy!! (And for dessert, I am having apple juice.)  I don't drink much soda pop or eat much junk food; I never have.

I will write in here again soon; until later, this is Sweet Pea Jones saying so long! God bless you!

~Love, your new friend in North Carolina, Sweet Pea.  :)
