A girl feels out of place at her aunt's home on the prairie.

If I would have known in advance that my Aunt Phoebe lives in the country, I would have declined her offer to come stay with her for the summer.  I mean, she lives WAY out in the country.  So far out in the country, in fact, that there isn't much to do and the closest neighbor is something like a mile or so away.

It is so quiet you can hear the wind rustling through the long, tall grasses, the birds singing, and cows mooing in the distance.  You can even hear the sound of your own breathing.

I am here staying with my aunt because my parents had another big fight and my Aunt Phoebe felt that my life was at risk, so she opted to take me for the summer.  Well, that would have been great had they informed ME about it first instead of packing up two big suitcases and shoving me on the train to get to Aunt Phoebe's place in Nowheresville!

I am not used to Quiet and Solitude.  I'm used to Life In The Big City.

Maybe my stupid parents were arguing about me??  I wouldn't put it past them, but honestly, I'm not a bad kid.  I may have a mouth sometimes and do stupid things from time to time, but I'm not knocking any old ladies over and robbing them blind or stealing stuff from the store, like some of my friends have done!  I'm a good kid: I have never been in trouble with the law, and I respect my parents (though, lately, that is becoming harder and harder to do with their dumb fighting all the time)!

Maybe they felt I was just another mouth to feed, so they decided to ship me to Aunt Phoebe's.

Maybe it will be a good thing that I am here; I might as well make the best of it.  Yet the smell of cow and horse shit makes me wanna hurl and I don't like the fact that Aunt Phoebe doesn't have cable: all she watches are her stupid soapies or the news!  UGH!  Give me America's Got Talent or American Idol ANY day!!  (Speaking of, I don't even know WHO won AI; can anybody help me? I'm desperate to know!!)

Aunt Pheobe is nice, don't get me wrong, but she runs a tight ship and she has been getting me up at five in the morning to help her with the chores and by the time I'm done, I smell just as bad (if not worse) than the cows and horses!  I also have to straighten up and dust; it's way past noon before I'm even done!  I'm glad to do it, but dang, I'm a kid!  It's just the start of summer vacation! I should be having FUN, not doing farm chores!!

All I would need is a long country dress (think "Little House On The Prairie"), my hair done up in braids, and a hick accent.  Then I would probably fit in real well!  No, I don't think I am cut out for The Country Life, but since I'm already here, I might as well make the best of it.  Sighhhh ...

Well... Know what? A stint in the country with Aunt Phoebe may not be all that bad. Give the girl a chance to get down to earth and see life from a different aspect.
As always, great story, Karen.

I hope this young lady learns to enjoy the break from her parents and from the hustle bustle of the world. I would. Just to get AWAY. No pressures. No worries. Ahhhhhhhhhh. Well done, Karen.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
