Tribute to Innocence in the Wild

Troubling heat persists at many levels-

Today my heart bruised.

A small vein tore and blood trickled, escaping from my heart into an empty cavity; filling a void, then disappeared on its endless journey.

The tear will mend, the heart will beat, but the scar will last forever; the memory will last forever.

The heat persisted, the blistering sun lingered too long; only dancing wings of locust gave proof that life existed.

Drought reigned.

With no mother's milk to share, the young fawn prince came to drink at pond's edge.

Wobbly rail legs, bent with exhaustion, leaned into the grassy berm for nourishment.

And then he was gone.

His proud mother, tall and glassy eyed, was lost to a woodland call.

I did not see these two again.

Drought reigned.

Again the sun rose upon the pond; another day of heat.

Today my heart bruised.

His small, fragile body silently was adrift, thirst quenched, spirit gone.

He slept.

Dreams of running with rabbits and dodging foxes; his days of princely youth, were not to come.

Drought reigned.

I waded in and with heavy arms I brought him to his final place of rest, in the bosom of the earth.

I will miss you fawn, the rabbits and foxes will miss you fawn, you are missed dear fawn.

Drought reigned.

So very sad. This has been an extremely sad and hellishly hot summer for both wild animals and abandoned pets.

Drought is a terrible occurrence. Rural Australians know it only too well. You have brought it home to me in your poem. Thank you for reading my poetry and short story. Laurel

I am beginning to hate Texas more and more ... and the summer (and this drought and heat with no end in sight) is the reason why. I should have NEVER left Ohio ....

Your beautiful poem rested heavy on my heart. So very sad to hear of these things. I live in Texas where the cattle are either dying or being sold off for slaughter. Even the birds are thirsty here, we leave fresh water for them every day. A loving poem for Mr. Prince Fawn; thank you for sharing this poem with us. Joy L. Hale

Oh, how awful. my heart is bleeding for them too, thank you for caring and giving that little fawn a resting place, so hard for you to watch. I pray the drought will be over soon, if you would like to send the dry hot weather over to England please do. God bless. Baz

So, so sad. We in other parts of the country read about this drought every day and it impact on humans and wildlife.
Just awful.
