John is devastated to learn that the person who had lost control on the ice and caused the five-car accident was blind drunk. He continues to struggle with unanswered questions.

Image of towering cumulus clouds (c) 2010, by Karla Dorman.

A week later since The Accident that changed the lives of five families (and injured six other people, three of them critically), and there are still no easy answers.

What I am having issues with is this: the person who had caused the wreck in the first place was blind drunk.  His blood alcohol level was three times the normal limit.  Because of his stupidity, five people are dead and six others are in two different area hospitals, recovering (and three of them are fighting to stay alive).  Why did the person get behind the wheel of a car when he should have known better?

The person in question was only a kid himself: a seventeen-year-old boy.  And he was not hurt.  Not even a scratch could be found on him when they checked him over at the scene.  Was he that drunk that he felt that he was invincible?

While my heart hurts for the families who lost loved ones, it hurts worst for the pastor of my church, Reverend Pete Goodkind.  His youngest son was only seven months old, and he was one of those people who were killed in the accident.  The kid had barely begun to live when his life was snuffed out by someeone who had too many conversations with the brown bottle.  Now Pastor Goodkind and his family are going to have to deal with life without their youngest family member.

Right now the person who caused the accident is in jail, but I wouldn't doubt that he gets out with a slap on his wrist.  Seems the ones who are repeat offenders often do.

The grandmother of the child (Pastor Goodkind's mother) is out of her coma, but she is paralyzed from the waist on down: there is doubt that she will ever walk again; she may have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

I don't know what to say to Caroline (Pete's wife) to help her feel any better.  I doubt that she will ever get over the thought of losing her baby son so suddenly.  Same way with Pastor Goodkind.  I know when I see them at the funeral (which is tomorrow, by the way), I will have difficulty trying to find the right words, especially since this was a situation that didn't have to happen.

I am trying hard to be understanding, but when I think of the injustice of it all, I get angry at God and I want nothing more than to curse His name and stop believing in Him altogether.  I mean, what kind of God would allow such tragedy to happen on a daily, if continual, basis??

~To be continued.~
