Today I found out that our neighbors aren't who we think they are and it truly makes me sad. Very sad.
My neighbor, Wilt and his wife, Wanda (names changed) are pet hoarders. They have at least two dozen cats living in their house .... and most seem to be in ill condition.
I went to their house to borrow a cup of sugar and what greeted me was an odor quite unlike anything I had ever smelled in my life. There was cat shit (and puddles of urine) strewn all over the floor and cats everywhere. Most of them seemed to be in poor shape. That's when I decided I needed to take action. Drastic action, if not for them, but for the poor, hapless creatures under their "care".
I had known Wilt and Wanda for a few months and knew that they loved animals (cats, in particular) ... or so they claimed. They were always running to the local PetSmart to get cat food or cat litter; I figured they were being good, responsible pet owners. Then I saw the sad scene today and I did the hardest thing I had ever done in my life: call the animal protection league on my neighbors.
The animal control league van is over at their place right now, getting rid of the cats. I am sure the police will be coming along, too, shortly, probably to make an arrest on my neighbors for "animal cruelty and neglect".
I know that Walt and Wanda will be angry with me for reporting them, but what is a guy to do? Animals certainly deserve much better treatment than what I witnessed today!
