Post war adventures unraveled into romance and mystery for Greg. An excerpt from my novel Flying on Golden WIngs
Flying on Golden Wings
Looking up at the few clouds, it reminded him when he had flown his plane back in the 1950's. He was a very good flyer then, not afraid to take his two- seater in any type of weather or travel any distance. He was younger, fearless...and of course in love. Yes, love can make you do unusual things. Greg met a beautiful woman in California where he was based during the post War World II. She worked as a secretary in a bank just off base where he would deposit his weekly checks from the Air force. He found out that she had lost her husband in the war and wasted no time asking her out. At first she was hesitant about dating Greg, how could she tell him she was ten years older than him. Persistantly he kept asking her to have dinner with him. After he had come to the bank everyday for the past five days straight she thought that she had better accept his offer before everyone at the bank would wonder if she was either brain dead or really empty-headed. On the fifth approach to asking her out he just told her to be ready as soon as the bank closed at four o'clock sharp because he had an unusual place to take her to dinner. She was surprised when he showed up in a jeep, but didn't comment on it. Her comment came when she noticed that they were at the Air force base and he stopped the jeep in front of a small plane. Greg would never forget the frightened look she displayed, nor the words that dropped from her mouth. "Augh, wha, do you...Oh my!" Greg, smiling just took her hand and said, "Come on, give it a try. You’ll love it!" She looked some what relieved when she pulled a scarf from her purse and wrapped it over her dark curls. Nervously she climbed in to the tiny aircraft and put the dark leather jacket and goggles Greg had handed her. Within minutes they were high up in the sky gliding smoothly as if they were a bird in flight. She began to relax and as she looked up over the rim of her sitting area of the plane, she noticed that the sun reflected off the wings of the plane giving it a golden glow. Greg looked back at her with smiles, "I'm taking you to the Moon Baby!"
