An excerpt from a collection of 4 original koans (or parable). Purchase the eBook through Lulu.com (see link below).

Sol and his Sensei sat beside a slow stream, watching the fish swim about.

"Sensei?"

"Yes, young Sol?"

"Why did the servant die?"

"So that we could be free."

"Why did the people not ask for this freedom?"

Sensei paused, then pointed to the fish.

"You see the swimming fish?"

"Yes, Sensei."

"If I put poison in the water, he will not notice. He will continue to swim unaware that he is killing himself by remaining. How would you save him? Would you explain to him that the water around him will kill him?"

"No, Sensei, he would die before he understood."

"Would you take him out of the water?"

"No, he would die without water."

"What should you do?"

"Lead him to the good water, where it is safe."

"Yes, where he can be free to see that the water was indeed, poisoned."

And Sol received enlightenment.
