48 years ago today, January 25th, our Prowler came to visit..This is Part 2 of my story.

My story continues on the night of the prowler getting halfway into our downstairs bedroom front window. The police arrived shortly within minutes of the prowlers quick escape. The police came into our house and started asking Mom all sorts of questions about what had happened, while the other six of my brothers and sisters sat on the living room couch with blankets around them, as the window in the bedroom was still open, as it had been when the prowler jumped back out of the window and ran. The Police from a couple other communities around our area came to help also. The policeman with the dog followed the prowlers scent in the back yard, and then lost it over the fence and into an adjoining street. The dog also
found his scent around the ground underneath the other downstairs windows. At this time is when the cigarette butts were found beneath at least 4 downstairs windows. In the meantime my Mom called my Dad at work, but he had already left to come home. Two of the other police cars drove around the block at different points in order to see if they could find anyone out that late, walking or running, and also let the police dog out several times to see if he could pick up the scent again. The other police car had to go on a police run, so just one of the police officers remained outside on the side of the back bedroom window. After about 20 minutes or so, Mom heard some commotion and the door bell was ringing and the policeman asked her to police open up the door..there was my Dad, with a police officer on each side of him. They asked if my Mom knew him, and she said of course, that he was her
husband. So they all came back in the house. It seemed that my Dad had just gotten out of his riders car and the policemen didn't see that, but they looked up in time to see him walking across the snow and heading up the front steps to the front door..They both came out from the side of the house and ordered him to halt. They asked him who he was and why he was there, and my Dad tried to explain who he was and why where they there questioning him. That is when the one policeman rang the doorbell and Mom identified Dad. After they went inside Mom told him what had happened. She had giving a description of the young man who she had seem coming in the window, and the description fit my Dad, from the leather jacket, build, color of hair,etc..Since Dad was home he got all of my brothers and sisters back up to bed and then came back down to talk some more with the police. Soon there were 4 police officers and the dog in the living room. Mom was so scared.
The Police told her that the prowler had to have been watching and lurking around for quite some time. They explained to my Dad about how the Prowler had stood on the fence above the porch bedroom and could see in the window this way. Also there had been some reports of a peeping Tom in the street behind us..The officers also mentioned that this prowler seemed determined to get in, and they did not think he was looking for money. They thought it had to be somebody in the neighborhood who was familiar with the comings and goings of who lived there in the house..The Police said they would be patrolling every 40 minutes or so until the next day and they would be back to go over some more details.
After they were gone, my Mom and Dad stayed up another hour or so talking about what had happened. My Dad had already made up a list of some changes he was going to make around the house starting the next day. He slept downstairs that night and everyone tried to get some sleep in as the next day was a school day also..
Please come back for Part 3 of The Prowler...
