Wow...how time flies by! Wasn't it just yesterday that I was a skinny teenager? My mind still says so, my body is being a traitor. How dare it fail me after I have taken care of it for so long? ...well, I guess I really haven't so maybe that's the problem.

A Big Number
by Mendy Thompson
©June 2006

I awakened one day a couple weeks ago and realized that I will be 50 years old this year.
Where have the years gone? What happened to the young, pretty little blonde who lived on Main Street in such a small town? Does she still live deep inside this aging body? Did her dreams come true ? Did she dream of being where I ended up today?

I think she would be mostly happy with the way things are right now. She had to suffer through a lot of struggles and trials to get here. That little girl lost so much innocence over the years but she came out of it stronger and a better person for it. They say “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger” and I believe that.

But how could the little girl with the dimples be fifty? That is half a century and definitely more than half a lifetime. Will life get better on the other side of this peak? I know for sure that the body fails you. The aches and pains of growing older are not pleasant. The fear of losing loved ones grows closer to reality as the years go by.

But the thought of future grandbabies and new puppies and springtime brings a ray of hope and a smile to my face. And the fact that I am living where I am supposed to live and loving who I am supposed to love and that I have healthy, happy children who are wonderful, strong adults….these are some of the reasons that 50 may not be so bad after all.

They say age is just a number. But this one is a BIG number.

I too just hit the 50 mark and believe me....it's no big deal. Am excited to apply for my AARP card. Think I threw the application away in a fit of denial when I was at the point you are at now. Hang in there, it only gets better, and I am sure I am getting smarter too!

So true, Mendy. First it's the small aches and pains, then the reading glasses, then comes the terrible realization that if you sit down on the floor you just may not be able to get back up! I have a few years to go before fifty, but I'm feeling every line of this delightful story of yours. Well done!
