Photograph of Sammi.

I always wanted a Dalmatian so when I first met Sammi I was thrilled. It was 60 below outside in North Pole, Alaska so I had wool gloves on, she ran up to me barked loudly grabbed the glove from my hand and off she ran while watching me to see how I would react to her theft. That began hers and mine relationship. It was the Christmas of 2000 and she was my gift or was I hers?

Immediately she began training me as to who was who’s boss, she would act as though she had to go outside run out to the yard then not come in when called. I ran around and round in the frozen outdoors in my pajamas many nights threatening her to leave her outside to freeze. As I would get just close enough to grab her she would bark and off she would run in the snow as I slid around on the ice, thinking I’ll never fall for this again. But I did over and over.

She was a real beauty a liver-spot Dalmatian who’s full name was Lucky Sammi Jo by the next Christmas we got transferred and had to move to Utah. Soon after Sam got pregnant with her first litter I babied her a bit and took her for special treats on Fridays to McDonalds for a kid’s hamburger and to Petsmart for her vitamins. She looked adorable in her seat she sat in, in the van with her little tummy pooching out. Soon the day came for the big arrival after many hours we went to the vet at midnight for ex-rays, all looked fine and she had her first baby about 1a.m. seven liver-spotted sibling’s later mommy and all eight babies slept.

I never saw such a happy mother she loved her spotless pups. She groomed them till they shined and I had a contest on my web-site to guess who would get the first spot as Dalmatians are born pure white. She was in heaven but after they were gone to their own homes she began having fake litters. She would gather toys every few months and make a nest and take care of her little fake babies.

A couple years later I got a little kitten we named Ziggy, Sammi immediately filled with milk and made a nest. Never was there a happier family then her and her little Zigs. I decided perhaps we should let her have one more litter and keep one for her and me as she was now seven years old. Well Sammi was different this time much slower and slept a bit more then her last pregnancy. Finally the time came for delivery all night hard labor till at 1 a.m. came Charlie her first baby. By morning still just Charlie we called the vet for help and they were booked please go to the emergency clinic they said. So we took poor Sam to the vet across the street.

He took ex-rays and sure enough there were two more pups. He said she needs a c-section please take Charlie home and we’ll call you. Well they did call please come get one of the pups Sammi and the other pup may not make it. I was so in shock we got the other little pup a girl named Sammi’s Lucky Girl and five hours later they called please come get the other little girl pup but Sam must stay the night. We named the other baby stitch as she had stitches from one end of her to the other. She was cut when they opened my poor Sammi. The next morning they called to tell us Sammi was dead when they came in that morning. WHAT? She was alone all night I was in shock my beautiful Sammi was gone and had died alone.

So now we had three black and white triplets to feed and love. We have kept them all Lucky looks just like her mother. I remember what a wonderful mother their mom was and hope I am taking good enough care of them. Oh yes and Lucky makes me chase her around the yard when its time to come in I wonder who taught her that I sure am glad its warm here in the desert.

Theresa,

I know you loved Sammi as much as she loved you. Again, I'm sorry for your loss. Sammi left you three beautiful gifts: puppies to carry on in her stead. A powerful write of love and compassion.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

What a terrible loss, Therese. I know what it is to lose a pet. You never really get over it. But how nice that you have Sammi's puppies to remind you of the love you each had for each other.
As tragic as this story is, it is also so beautiful.
Best,
Elizabeth
