A short SF story suitable for all ages.

Title: The Girl from the Future

Author:Joyce I Devenish
I will be sixteen years old tomorrow. Mother and Mike are sending me to school back in the year 2107. That is 100years ago. Mike wants me to keep a journal for the people of my time to read how I lived back then, so here goes.

My name is Penelope but I am called Pen by mother and Mike my motherís partner.

I sometimes call Mike dad or the Commander but mostly I call him Mike.

I have relatives back in the twenty-second century. Magna, my mother was rescued by Mike and taken to the future when she was pregnant with me so I really belong back there as that was my mother's time. (but that is another story) I am told I have six or seven cousins. My uncle came from the same planet as my real father. My father, Leem died when the planet 'Hala' disintegrated. So there you have it. I am half earthling and half alien.

Mike is the commander here at Mediana Estate. He runs all of the companies the estate owns with the help of Abe and the other Ancients. Together they control most of the worldís resources. Abe and Jodie are partners and they also live on the estate. There are not many people my age here due to a health problem last century. I think this is the main reason why Mike wants me to go back to 2107 and live with Uncle Gill and my aunt.  My Auntís name is Jacky and my oldest cousinís name is Tuck. He is older than I am and we will attend the same school and try to keep my heritage a secret. I am to be passed off as Tuckís foster sister. We donít know much about the younger children so I will have plenty to write when I get back to Earth 2107.

Tuck told me it is Thursday here today.

Well I arrived without any trouble. I donít know why Mike made so much fuss about time travel, I am sure they can come here anytime they want to.

I think I might like it here. Tuck doesnít know it but Uncle Gill is a full blooded alien and if he isnít careful people will expect him to take over a role in the army so he acts as much like an earthling as he possibly can. He makes me smile because he lets Tuck think that Tuck is stronger than him. I think he should let Tuck know the truth.

Tuck is very proud and will probably cause trouble at school. Uncle Gill wouldnít trust him on his own and has asked me to try to control him. Uncle Gill and my mother are great friends, she was raised as his older sister and he thinks I can do anything she can do. I hope I can take care of Tuck at school. He's an egomaniac. He seems to be the boss where his mother is concerned. Only my younger cousins get the better of him because he is really a softy. However he has no trouble stopping their fights without using any force at all.

Tuck always seems to get what he wants. My other cousin Anthony is Auntie Rueís son. Aunty Rue was born on Hala like my father. Anthony is younger than me. He is very good looking. He wants to be an astronaut when he grows up. His father is an astronaut.

I have other cousins. Come to think of it, all of the part aliens have been doing a good job of populating Planet Earth.

We came to school in a funny old style air train. I donít know why they called it a train. It is about 100 years old. I think it must run on a rail. Anyway we arrived alright. After we signed in Tuck and I were separated. I have to share a room with two other girls one called April and the other one called Silvia. We joined up for, kung fu, and golf. I donít know much about sport but Iíve signed up because that is what everyone else was doing.  Silvia asked me where my clubs were. ĖMy what?-

She thinks I am stupid but is kind about it and said she would lend me clubs. I told her I thought it would be easy to hit a little ball into a hole.

I donít know what she was laughing about. I can learn.

We all went to the welcoming lunch. There I joined Tuck and introduced him to Silvia and April. We sat at the same table with another boy about Tuckís age called Rouse and one older boy who started to argue with Rouse about kicking him under the table. I didnít know who was at fault but Tuck quickly told them both to shut up as a man approached. He introduced himself as Professor Ranger the sports master and suggested if anyone wanted to fight he would arrange a bout in the Gym. No one took up his offer.

The older lad, I think his name is Basil, well Silvia said it is, anyway he was engaged in flirting with Silvia and with eating. She was only interested in finding someone who played golf. He claimed he was very good at it but his sport was Kung Fu.

Tuck said he was rather good at golf. However when he claimed to have a black belt in all marshal arts; they all laughed and yelled at him. I could see his feelings were hurt. Professor Ranger joined the table to discover what was happening. Basil told him he would take up his offer to arrange a bout between him and Tuck.

Now the whole school is involved in the contest between Tuck and Basil to be held in the gym with everyone invited.

Everyone is talking about the fight.  I know I have to be there and I have to be as close as I can get to the match. I am not sure how much power Tuck has or if he can fly but judging by myself he might shock everyone into believing he was the man of steel himself in the guise of Tuck Porter.

As soon as I got Tuck alone I tried to dissuade him from fighting as he is younger than Basil so it wouldnít be hard to get out of the match. Tuck said he would beat him with both feet on the ground.

Fortunately the fight was postponed because Basil got food poisoning. He is in hospital. I suspect Rouse slipped something into his meal. Rouse seems to be very amused by Basilís illness. He is sure Basil will be better tomorrow.

When I was sitting in the grounds in front of the school, I decided to get in touch with Uncle Gill. I left him a Ėmust talk to you-text. A few minutes later I saw him coming through the gate and up the walk a short distance from me. Thinking back he must have taken off as soon as he read the text without telling anyone because he got straight down to business. Tuck joined us a few minutes later and soon convinced his father he wouldnít do any flying. I think he was annoyed with me for calling his father. I had no idea Uncle Gill could be there so soon. Uncle Gill quickly disappeared behind a tree. Tuck is still mad at me.

I seem to be able to do the work okay but I donít like history. It depresses me. Only one hundred years ago there were people here on earth going hungry and some without clean water. There was lots of other bad stuff going on and I donít like it.

Tomorrow Silvia is going to teach me to play golf. We went into town and I bought a set of second hand clubs and a box of balls. The game seems silly but I will do my best.

Well I lost all of my golf balls but I soon got my drive under control and before weíd played nine holes Silvia was pleased with me.

I might get up very early tomorrow. Basil has recovered but hasnít mentioned the fight. He wants to play golf with Silvia so I think I will lose my partner.

Never mind, if Tuck canít play with me I will play alone.

He is in the football team and has made a lot of friends. Rouse is in this team too. Basil and Rouse kick and push each other when ever they get close.

I was out on the golf links this morning when I met a nice young man who helped me a lot. His name is Mat short for Mathew I think. I was doing things wrong and he said I will be an excellent player with practice. My aim is getting better.

I am going to meet Mat again in the morning.

Today I holed in one. That is the aim of this game I believe.

I donít think it is very hard to do but Mat thought it was good. I am still learning the rules. Mat is in his last year here, and then he plans to go to university to study economics. If it wasnít for Mat I would be getting homesick.

I donít like school much. The boys fight a lot and Professor Ranger expects Tuck and Basil to put on this exhibition of kung fu to raise money for the school on Saturday. An exhibition might be okay but Basil has an agro nature and Tuck has to be the best at everything. He will want to win. They will both want to win.

I will have to buy two front row tickets. Mat wants to come. He is excited about it. I donít know if I can get tickets. Both contestants can prove they have black belts and someone put it in the local paper. Now the whole district wants to come.

The boys are betting on the fight. It doesnít sound like it is meant to be an exhibition match. Even the teachers are discussing what they think will be the outcome. Rouse and Professor Ranger are putting on a real exhibition bout as a lead up to the main event. They both have belts of some kind. Theyíre practicing a routine that looks okay.

I wish Tuck and Basil would do something like that.

Mat has got tickets for the match. I donít know how he got them but they are for the front row. I have to get something nice to wear. .I only have golf baggies and school cloths but I need something better seeing he got us front row seats. Silvia has offered to lend me her lace tights and silver sari but I think itís a bit much for a kung fu exhibition. I would like something a little looser.

I have decided I should wear my real clothes. The suit I came from home in, so that if I need to move really fast I can.

If I think things are going wrong I can excuse myself and get to the power box. With everything pitch black nobody will know what is happening. Then I can get back to Tuck and calm him down. Why was I worried? Everything is great. Probably the match will go well but I canít help worrying.

Saturday night

 It's late.

The bout started at seven o'clock. The Gym was packed with spectators Mat looked very nice in an elegant jacket. Mike had warned the men liked to dress up in this time so I didnít laugh, in fact I felt that I was letting him down in my old suit. The preliminary exhibition was boring.  Just as well it wasn't very long.

Then Tuck and Basil came out in very impressive outfits. They managed to give a very good exhibition of their skills without performing anything too amazing for about five minutes until Basil accidentally hit Tuckís back with his foot. I knew it hurt him although he did a quick somersault.

Without my help the lights went out and when they came back on about half a minute later Tuck was standing on Basilís shoulders. He spun into the air and landed on his feet in front of Basil. They bowed to each other and the applause was deafening. Just a little more showing off and then they left the Gym.  Mat hugged me and thatís all for now. Except that I saw Uncle Gill leaving the gymnasium. I should have trusted him Ö
