He had found the perfect little dog for Marsha,a Yorkie that could charm anyone.

Carl was finally satisfied and ready to call it quits on Christmas shopping. He had found the perfect little dog for Marsha ,a Yorkie that could charm anyone. He had been looking for weeks, but none had appealed to him, until this one. He called it Yorkie, knowing that Marsha would want to name him. He and Marsha had lived together a year, but had been dating for 4 years. They were content with things as they were, and had no desire to wed.

He loved Marsha completely and knew he'd never find a better women. She was attractive, 5'5 slim with long chocolate brown hair blue eyes, radiant smile, great attitude and a totally satisfying lover.
When she mentioned wanting a dog and asked his opinion,he had said "let's think about it", but knew he would surprise her with it,
for Christmas.

He was carrying the dog in a small kennel and went into the pet store to buy a leash, and some dog toys, food ,etc. He wanted to make sure he had all they would need, to begin with. He approached a counter and said to the clerk,"I just bought a dog for my wife and want a few things, first af all a leash. The clerk said"okay let me get a few together and you can make a decision on which kind you want.
Carl said "Thank's that's great" while he took Yorkie out of the kennel, nolding him under one arm.

The little dog was shivering, while trying to lick his face, and Carl thought, he was probably both happy and scared, not knowing what was coming next. When the clerk returned he began to explain each leash, while putting on the leather one which he liked best. After the leash was on,Carl put the dog on the floor and walked around with Yorkie to try it out. He left Yorkie on the floor while he took the leash off and took the next one to try out.

Somehow in the minute it took to get the other leash, Yorkie ran away, they had to go through the aisles calling him,and a few customers that were in the store saying he went this way, or another said he went that way. In the meantime others came into the store so as the door opened Yorkie could have found an escape route. After searching a half hour,Carl finally said he had to leave and left his info to be phoned, or emailed if he showed up.

Carl was heartbroken, he began a search on the streets, but with no success. Aftr an hour he finally went home feeling very let down. Marsha was there when he got in and asked "Where have you been supper is getting cold?" Carl said"I need a drink,"then began to tell her what had happened. Marsh hugged him saying,"Oh sweetheart, that is so sad. I'm happy you wanted to surprise me and a Yorkie is perfect, but what a shame this happened. What can we do now?Put it in the paper? You have ownership receipts right?

Carl sipped his brandy and sighed ,"yeah I have the papers. A lot good they'll do. " "Oh no you don't, feeling hopeless is the last thing we need. Let's be positive, and see what we can come up with."

In the meantime, little did anyone realize that a little waif that was homeless and only 7 yrs old had, grabbed Yorkie right in  the store in one of the ailes and snuck out with him. Now back at the old empty burned out factory where many transients and homeless lived Ricky was so happy to have a pet at last, no one was going to take him away. He had him under his coat with just his nose showing through and he was going to keep him right there.

However, it wasn't long before Ricky realized after Yorkie wet all over him that he had to walk him to let him do his duty. He also hadn't though about what he would feed him, since he barely found enough food for himself. He found a rope to tie around Yorkie's neck when he walked him, and whatever food he scavenged for himself he gave half to the dog. He decided to call him  Buddy, because  that's what he was to him.

The others that came and went at the factory were good to Ricky and Buddy, sharing food and friendship with him,so they were able to survive. Ricky was the youngest one there, besides one boy of eleven and a couple teens. Ricky had a sad background. His parents were drug addicts, his father died of an overdose, and his mother was arrested a few months ago on a DUI and killing a pedestrian.

Ricky had run away just before the mothers accident before anyone knew he was gone. The mother when questioned about her son, said"I think he went to live with his Aunt in another state, and he's better off there." She wouldn't tell them what state so they were investigating the matter.

Carl and Marsha covered every aspect they could, and decided they would wait until after the holidays to get another dog. In the meantime Ricky was very good with Buddy, they had become real pals and Buddy would do tricks for Ricky rolling over playing dad, holding his paw up for a handshake, begging for food, even getting papers bringing them back to Ricky, they used a lot of papers on the floor for beds, to keep warm, and many other things.

Just 4 days before Christmas, one of the older men who stayed at the factory all the time, and everyone listened to for his wisdom, was reading the paper, and came upin the advertisement for a lost dog. He called Ricky and read it to him. It mentioned the pet shop the owner had been in,also how sad the wife had been losing her Christmas gift that way. It offered a $100.00 reward for return
of the dog.

When the old man finidhed reading, he said," Ricky I think you should return Buddy to the owners, tell them you found the dog outside running down past the pet shop. It had no tags so you took it with you. They will give you the money and you can buy a dogin the pet shop for only $20.00, and have enough to get a few other things for yourself. But most of all you will not have the guilt of stealing anothrr persons dog."

Ricky thought about it overnight , then asked the old man if he would go with him, and say he read the article and that's how they knew. The old man consented, and the next morning after using the phone number in the paper to call the owners, they were now meeting outside the pet store to give them the dog.

Ricky cried when he handed Buddy over to Carl, and Marsha saw the heartache the boy suffered. She said" I'm sorry you have to part with the dog, I hope you'll be able to find another dog, quickly to replace Yorkie,, and she handed  a hundred dollar bill to the older man. He asked " Could you possibly give us the money in tens, I'm afraid no one will cash a hundred dollar bill for the boy."  Carl looked them both over, and realized they were homeless. He said,
"Yes we can do that, but first why don't you come home with us so we can have lunch together. It will be better for the dog to be in a nice place when Ricky leaves.

So they went to Carl and Marsh's home, where they were given food and not only $100.00 in tens but $200.00,to get some warmer and newer clothes from the thrift store. They also learned about Ricky's story and said they would like to have him stay with them for awhile until they could decide what would be best for him. So the heavens were smiling down on Ricky for a change and there would be life and love in Carl and Marsha's home for Christmas with Ricky and Buddy to play with. It sounds sappy, but it's true , Christmas is a very special time, when these kind of stories seem to happen  quite frequently. Merry Christmas to all!

This is definitely an awesome Christmas story. Yesterday I took my grandson to a Puppy"s Only pet store. You can walk around and pick out any puppy to paly with and "try him on" to see if you want to adopt. There was a homeless man in there attached to a Lab> he would take him out and play with him and have the dog lick his face. He was loved. Both of them were loved. The workers there said he comes in everyday. He and the dog had bonded. The problem is...what happens when the Lab gets adopted out?

Life is relentless and loving at the same time.

Love to you Eileen and thanks for this dear story.
Love,
Susan
