A story of redemption, beauty, real value and friendship...

BUNNIE

She appeared to me as a sort of misshapen lump of human flesh, lumbering down the sidewalk in seeming half-witted stupor. I knew there was a spark in there—somewhere. If only I could find that one small speck that shined out from her eyes, even one eye. Sadly, there was only dullness. And soft sighs amid soft rounded flesh. I sighed. What to make of her? As if it was my job to make anything of her. I knew she felt her pain as acutely as any other, in the soft folds of her beating heart. In the soft folds of her beating heart, maybe she dreamed of flying, of being free from the awkward constraints of her body.
She did not ask to be born this way. Life seemed out of balance, unseemly and it was as if she stumbled around in a gauzy film of haze, like her one eye that might have had the singular light had been misted over with milky cataracts. Still it was there, I knew it was. She knew, too. She knew she was a young girl flying every night in her dreams. She was a young pretty girl in pink tights and gauzy ballerina dreams dancing and flashing across the stage of her existence. She knew how to fly like few do, and she soared every night past planets and stars. Intuitively, I knew she made a choice somewhere long ago, to willingly become a giant lumbering oaf—strong as oak inside. Born once small, wet and helpless into her parents arms—she was wise beyond words, redeemed, redeeming, choosing to take on some mysterious higher mission while in mortal skin.
What we didn’t know, she was the lucky one in ways I can never fathom, while I being born of fair skin and clear blue eyes—my choices the more difficult, prey to ensnaring temptations and lapses of judgment. She was innocent in her oafishness, if I can use that word. Simple words chosen, she might forget who you were one day and the next claim you as a dear friend because you always took the time to speak to her and call her name without judgment. In those moments of remembering, I am the humbled one, not worthy most days for her scepter of benevolence. Yet, I know that one day she will wake up from her dreams and fly, and she will be home once again as the dazzling light she really is.
