My Bestest Friend. (By Packy Simpson, aged 8)

A little boy writes about his furry best friend and how she came into his life.

Packy and "Jingle Bells" were both featured in the series, "A Cat Named Jingle Bells", a six-part story.

My name's Packy. I'm eight.

I live with my mommy and my kitty in an apartment building here in Chicago, Illinois. I am very glad to have my kitty in my life; she's the best!

I didn't always have "Jingle Bells". See, where we live we used to not to be able to have pets; but that rule was changed. Now we can have dogs or even cats and nobody'll get mad.

I got "Jingle Bells" for Christmas. Santa Claus brought her to me. She's the best Christmas present I've ever gotten!

"Jingle Bells" is all black with green/yellow eyes, and she purrs--a LOT. She loves to sleep next to my belly when I go to bed at night, and she loves to play. I play with her by waving some string above her head, or she bats at balls or chases her tail; when she plays it always makes me laugh!

Some of my apartment buddies who live down the way from me have met "Jingles"; and they love her nearly as much as I do. They think she's cute. And she IS. She's one of the cutest kitties I've ever seen in my life!

It seems since my kitty came, I've been a lot happier. I am disabled, and sometimes life's been bad; but then "Jingle Bells" came, and she makes me forget about all my troubles. She's a really cool friend, and I am glad I have her!

Well, "Jingle Bells" is meowing again; she wants to be let in my room. I will go for now; I will write in here again soon, with more stories about my kitty. Bye bye!

~Packy Simpson, aged eight.

I love the way you create such affection between your subject and object in this write, Karen; and create such tenderness in your readers, too. In a very easy and unforced way, you sensitively underscore what the beauty of an animal-human partnership and loving bond can do to create confidence and well-being in both. Although Packy is not without his very real difficulties, you take us into his "other world", his "happy space" where time seems to stand still. Such wonderful contentment permeates this tale! Bless you and thank you. Kate xx

Packy is lucky. So many kids never get a pet.
