An update on the little girl featured in "A Thanksgiving Blessing" (Parts 1-6). Like Bryson Humphrees, she continues to make incredible strides, much to the delight of her family.

To look at her now you wouldn't even think of her ever being sick.

Yet we have seen a great change in our newest daughter, Korina Thu Grace, who came to us from Vietnam just before Thanksgiving:  it has been nothing short of a miracle.

Korina is walking, getting around more; her overall medical picture has improved. So has her personality. This sudden burst of good health has unlocked the child's true personality: we find Korina to be a giggling, squealing little bundle of neverending, kinetic energy that refuses to be slowed down even for a minute. It seems the only time she's ever quiet is when she's in bed, down for her nap or down for the night.

Korina is learning to take care of herself; she prides herself on looking her best. She is very fastidious about her hair, her clothes, her playtoys, her room. She is as neat as a pin, unlike her brothers, who are regular little piggies. LOL

Korina's older sister Kristmas just adores her; it seems that the remote control fight on Christmas morning is a faded memory. They follow each other around, sleep together when they nap or go to bed, play together as good sisters should. Krissie is teaching Korina how to share; I think Korina has finally grasped that concept because there are no longer tears shed.

Which is a good thing, really.

Korina is learning English at a rapid rate,.  She looks forward to watching the children's programs on television. It is still a new concept for her, but she enjoys the action, the sounds, the colors.

Korina is doing exceedingly well at her physical therapy sessions. She is almost to the point to where she can run on her crutches; to keep up with her is exhausting; nothing seems to slow her down!

Sometimes she falls but it's nothing that hugs (or a grape-flavored lollipop) can't cure or fix. This child is absolutely amazing!!

Korina does suffer from "night terrors", so she has a night light on to ease her fear of the dark.  Sometimes Kristmas or her kittycat sleep with her.  This gives her comfort, having a "security blanket" or a warm body near.

I don't know what she dreams about, nor do we know of her earlier background; however, we feel that she may have been abused; this is why she was so frightened when she first came to us.

Korina is scared of strangers, though, particularly men.  Maybe she was sexually abused; we don't know.  This aggrieves us greatly because we can't imagine, even begin to understand the horror she must have endured. I can't fathom it because how someone can do this to an innocent little child , particularly a disabled one.

It's something I will never accept.

Whenever Korina sees a stranger, she screams as though she is being killed; it takes one of us (her mommy or daddy) to "rescue" her; only then does she feel safe. She has some separation anxiety issues, which is another thing we are working on with her.

Time heals all wounds, they say.  Even with everything that's gone on in her life, we are more than blessed to have Korina in our lives; we are glad to have her as our daughter.  She may have only been with us since just before Thanksgiving, but already we can't imagine our family without her. We love her that much!
