As Christy and Laura grew older, they learned what happened to Vinnie, even as children they understood something was different about him, when the news came on, when they saw the grainy images of those people in that far away land, he turned his head or left the room, so the girls soon followed suit. If it upset Uncle Vinnie so bad they did not want any part of it. Uncle Vinne was a good uncle, he let them raise in his wheelchair, he even took them fishing, but they knew something bad had happened to him before they were born. He had been in that far away war, the one that was always on T.V.
Mamma and Uncle Vinnie were brother and sisters, and Mamma would do anything for Uncle Vinnie, she had even helped him to buy a house, Mamma had a good job, and so did Daddy, and Daddy helped as well. Uncle Vinnie always said Mamma picked a winner and its a good thing she did, because if Daddy had ever been mean to Mamma, Uncle Vinnie would get him, and they had no doubt he would.
Uncle Vinnie believed in Jesus just like they did, they all went to church on Sundays together, but even some of the people in church could be mean because they didn't like the war. No one liked war, but it happened, and it wasn't Uncle Vinnie's fault, he fought because he felt it was right.
"Why are people mean to you sometimes Uncle Vinnie? " The girls asked. "I thought you were supposed to be nice at Church isn't that what Jesus wants?"
"Yes sweetie it is, but sometimes people say things they dont mean when they are scared or when they don't understand something."
