Over the next few weeks, Kelly learned every detail of the road between Payson and Scottsdale. She was also trying to keep in contact with her husband and daughter back in Germany, her sister back east, and her chain of command in the Air Force. Years later she would look back at this time in her life and think about how much easier it all would have been if the Internet had been more advanced and e-mail a common communication option. As it was, the mail seemed to be inadequate in the short time she had. Long distance phone calls were unbearably expensive but absolutely necessary.
“Brian; hello honey. How are you? Is Mary awake?” Kelly wanted to rush through all her questions but felt Brian’s hesitation. Their last phone call hadn’t gone well, with Brian frustrated with her prolonged absence.
“I’m fine. Mary’s asleep. It’s late here,” Mary could visualize him glancing at his watch, “it’s after 10:00. Why did you wait until so late to call?”
