I was walking on the beach alone, on a rainy day in March. On a Sunday afternoon, from Monster to Kijkduin.(Netherlands) I really enjoyed being there all alone. The smell of the sea, the wind in my hair… amazing.
Suddenly something brown caught my attention. It seemed like a bottle. I took my shoes of and walked a few passes into the sea. I picked the bottle up and walked back to shore. The temperature of the water felt refreshing. The bottle was closed with a cork and I removed it, to take a look inside. Nothing in there…
Two seconds later someone tapped me on the back.
“Same to you”, I replied.
“Thank you, for releasing me out of that bottle. I never expected, to get out of that bottle again…”
I looked at him and was pleasantly surprised. Quite handsome he looked, with eyes like emeralds and raven black hair.
“Can I walk with you for a while?” he asked…
“Sure, why not?”
We talked a while about normal things, enjoying each other’s company.
Then suddenly he said: ”You freed me from this bottle. I wish to thank you for that. What if I would give you three wishes?”
“Three wishes… Hmmm”
“I have to think about that.”
“Sure. I would do so too, if I had the chance…”
“If I told you my dream, would it be helpful to extract my wishes from that?”
“If they aren’t too difficult…”
I started talking. Told him my life story and the handsome man that I met a while ago. How we waited for the same bus, to go to the same information day. How we became classmates. I felt more for him, but he didn’t know yet.
“So, actually you would like to marry this guy in time”, he interrupted.
“Yes”, I said softly.
“Your first wish will come true . You’ll get married on you birthday.”
I thought that he was kidding…On my birthday….With the guy I was falling for…
“You don’t believe me? I’ll tell you…you’re getting married and he will change jobs. Your life will be a happy one, but not with much money. You are also going to have children from him. Three. You will know what they are going to be when you are pregnant from your kids… Consider it your first wish.”
“Thank you.” I was stunned. How could he tell me so much? I guess he had to be a real genie.
“Wish number two.”
“ I always lived in houses without a garden. I would like to have a little garden of my own.” That truly was a deep wish, I cherished for a long time. A garden with an apple tree.
“When you are married eight years to your husband, you’ll move to a house with a garden. The garden is small but you are going to plant an apple tree in it. You can provide your children with apples five years after you planted the tree.” He said it with a smile. “Your wishes are all for others” he said… “Don’t you have anything to wish for yourself?”
“Yes…I wish for myself, to live a happy life with my future family, and be successful in what I plan to do…”
“What would you like to do?”
“Writing children’s books. Or poetry. Any way, I would like to please others with my writing…”, I replied.
“That is the hardest wish to accomplish. You will get rejected, you know. Nobody is waiting for stories that you like to tell. People are getting egoistic in ten to fifteen years from now.
They won’t back you up, they are jealous at you, telling themselves that you are making it all up, to get attention.
They also will spread word that you don’t like your children, but your children are also gifted in their own way. You are the one, who will open the door to their success. You will be blessed with love from your family. Also blessed with love of foreign friends. But none of your countrymen will like your work. You’re going to be famous abroad. Believe me…I’ll make that happen for you.”
“Thank you. I really don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say a thing, nor thank me for it. You are the one that have to believe in yourself. You will make your dream come true .” He said it with a smile. “I would like to give you an advice. Take the bus home. It will start to shower in half an hour, you’ll be soaking wet if you don’t take the bus.”
“I will, thanks!” I smiled at him, wondering about his words…
Thirteen years later I saw the genie again. Not on the beach, but here in my village.
“You’re doing fine!”, he said. “Two out of three already accomplished…”
He counted the little apples in my tree. “It will be a good year for you”, he said. “You have a nice bunch of kids!”
I smiled. He was still as handsome as the first time.
“The last wish you’re working on at this moment. It will take a little more time, but you will succeed.”
I showed him a part of my work. “Nice.” He smiled.
“I love your stories for children. Eventually there will be made a book out of it in the United States”, he said. “I will help you with that, because it isn’t easy to take control from here…, at least I owe you that much…”
“I would be grateful, if you did that…”, I replied.
“Wait and see…patiently!” He left with a smile on his face.
Until now, it is the only wish that hasn’t been fulfilled…yet.
