12 ways you can reduce your carbon footprint in 30 days

By Debra S. Fleming, Recycling Coordinator South Pasco Predators

  •  Recycle at Home:  Recycle all plastic bottles, cans and newspaper cardboard and paper (Shred it first!) in the blue recyclable bags available in any grocery store.  If you do not have a blue bag program in your neighborhood use one of the drop off locations in your area.  Pasco County Drop Off Centers!  http://www.pascocountyfl.net/utilities/deptu/dropoff.html
  •  Stop Junk Mail!  Every year 100 trees are chopped down to provide mail no one reads!  go to www.greendimes.com or www.junkbusters.com to stop junk mail from coming to your home.  Donate if you feel so inclined or just use the free program!
  •  Use Re-usable tote bags when you shop (It’s not just for grocerys)!  The cheapest bags are at Wall Mart and Publix AND Publix now has a pink breast cancer bag for sale!   You need about 5-6 bags for about $200 in groceries.  Recycle your old plastic bags, egg cartons and foam trays at your store.
  • Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher in the summer.  Close blinds in unused rooms to keep them cooler and use fans if you have them in each room.  They keep the AC from having to run as hard.
  • Shop online and buy in bulk when you can!
  • Recycle batteries cell phones and foam trays at Pasco County Schools!
  • Buy recycled goods whenever you can!   Increasing the demand for these products will increase the need for recyclables....and closes the loop on recycling!
  •   Un-plug things when you are not using them!  Vampire energy attributes to over 20% of your home energy costs.  Why give the energy companies money you need?
  •  Install low flow shower heads in your home that use air to create more water pressure  (It Works, trust me!) and take shorter showers!  This can reduce your water bill by over 30%!
  •   Do not hand wash or rinse your dishes before loading and only use the dishwasher when full.  Use a phosphate free dishwashing liquid and throw some white vinegar in there for a really clean set of dishes!
  •   Car pool to Predator Games with other Predators your neighborhood!
  •   Recycling print cartridges at Office Depot or Staples provides you with discounts of $3 per cartridge for future purchases!
