facing the music...

Tommy was no sooner inside the Brownstone residence, when Lydia’s father whisked him away into the den.  Mr. Brownstone offered him a cigarette.  Tom said, “No, thank you.”

“Well, Tommy, I suppose you think you’re in here to get the ass chewing of your life.  But, that isn’t going to happen this time.  As for Lydia’s pregnancy, frankly, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner.  Lydia is a little on the wild side.  My wife never would allow me to discipline her the way I did the boys.  I do want to ask you something though, Tom.”

            “Yes sir?”

“Are you sure that the baby is yours?”

            “What?”

“Are you sure you are the father of Lydia’s child?”  Mr. Brownstone clarified.

“Yes, sir.  Why do you ask?”  Tom was curious about what the man’s suspicions were.

“The reason why I didn’t ask your family for any financial contribution to this unfortunate situation is because I’m not as sure as you are that the baby is yours.  If we took money, and this kid is born with olive skin, and dark hair... oh, say for instance it comes out looking like that Miltonelli boy, that would be quite an embarrassment to this family.  Since the two of you are in agreement that the best thing concerning this child is to give it up for adoption, we’ll just send her to her mmm... Aunt Grace until it gets closer to the delivery date.”

“Mr. Brownstone, I’m very sorry about what happened.  I never should have let things get out of control the way I did.  Lydia likes to have a good time, but she is not fast, or easy.”

“Maybe it’s the generation gap.  I see things differently.  When a girl of sixteen writes in her diary about enjoying the physical relationship she shares with that of a hoodlum after she’d already given herself to you, I see her as being very loose morally.”

“Mr. Brownstone, Lydia and I didn’t intentionally engage in sexual intercourse.  If the Chevalier brothers, and Jeremy Hayward hadn’t spiked the punch with liquor, Lydia and I never would have left the party.  I was worried that the coach would find out I was there drinking.  That would’ve gotten me thrown off the team for sure.”

“What?  Do you really think your father couldn’t have bought your way out of a situation as simple as that?  That’s minor.  Basically that’s chicken shit stuff, all kids do that.  Getting a girl in trouble is serious.  I’m surprised you didn’t use a safe.”

There was that word again, safe.  Tom still wasn’t sure what it was, and he didn’t want to ask.  One of these days he’d find out.  “I didn’t really think either of us drank enough of the punch to get as carried away as we did, but what’s done is done.  I apologize.”

“Thank you, but it is I that apologize to you.  I’m afraid that daughter of ours has deceived you, and the child she is carrying is not yours.  Not that I don’t believe she put out to you, also.  Frankly, the end of the school year is just around the corner, and she’ll be Grace’s problem for the summer.  I look forward to that.  If you want to cut and run, I wouldn’t blame you a bit.  I doubt she’ll ever be faithful to you.  Her pants are too hot.  She’ll be knocked up again soon after this one is born.  Oh, and by the way, her brothers don’t know a thing about this.  The fewer people that know, the better.”

Tom was stunned at Lydia’s fathers cruel assessment of Lydia’s moral standards.  He knew he didn’t like the beatings his father gave him, but the character assassination of Lydia by her adopted father was equally as cruel.  He wondered how much of what Mr. Brownstone had said to him had been hurled at Lydia over the past few weeks.  All of this could’ve been avoided if Lydia only would have told that she had been gang raped...  Then on the other hand, perhaps her father would have believed she’d willingly had sex with Jacque, Donnie, and Jeremy, in addition to himself and Animal.  Her father was going believe what he wanted to believe, and where it came to Lydia, he only wanted to believe the worst.

Tom and Mr. Brownstone went to the dining room where Lydia, her mother and her brothers were already seated.  Tom sat in the empty seat next to Lydia.  Mr. Brownstone said grace, then they enjoyed their meal.  Conversation was pleasant, and uneventful.  Staff brought in a birthday cake with seventeen candles lit, and placed it in front of Lydia.  The lights were turned off and everyone sang, “Happy Birthday to You.”  Lydia had tears rolling down her cheeks.  Tom took her hand and gently squeezed it as she blew out the candles.  The lights were turned back on, and the cake was cut.  Everyone was enjoying it including Lydia’s brother Gary.  He started teasing that Mom liked Lydia best because he didn’t get a chocolate marble cake for his seventeenth birthday.  As a matter of fact, his birthday being so close to Christmas never got much attention at all.  Everyone was laughing about it, until Lydia put down her fork, and started counting on her fingers.  Gary turned seventeen in December...  January, February, March, April, May I turn seventeen.  Anyone care to explain that?”

            “Explain what dear?”

“Explain how you gave birth to Gary in December, then to me in May?  There isn’t enough months, Mummy.  Which one of us is your ‘real’ child?  The time doesn’t add up.”

The room fell silent.  Mr. Brownstone placed his fork and napkin on the table.  “I knew this day would come.  But did anyone ever listen to me?  This is exactly what happens when honesty and truth takes a back seat to deception and lies.  You tell her, Mum.  Boys, come with me.”  Tom didn’t know if that included him, or not, but he chose to leave with the guys.  He didn’t want to let on that he already knew the outcome of what the topic of this discussion was going to be.

Lydia, you are the daughter I always wanted.  I had the three boys one right after the other.  My health wasn’t holding up as well as I would have liked to continue trying for a girl.  My sister found herself in trouble when she fell in love with a married man.  He took advantage of her innocence, however he had no intention of ever leaving his wife because of their children.”

“And that trouble was me.  Seems like I’ve been nothing but trouble ever since.”

“Don’t feel that way Lydia.  I love you, I’ve always loved you.  You know how I cry every year when I send you to Gracie.  And, my life would light up again as soon as my little girl came back home.  Mummy loves you as if you were born from my own body.  I know you are a good girl.  I’m sure if those boys hadn’t spiked that punch, you and Tommy would not have become careless, and gone all the way.  I would love to keep your baby and raise it as my own, but your father will not agree.”

“My father?  Tell me, is Daddy my real father?”

“No dear.  He is my husband, and the boys father.  Grace got involved with a man she worked for, she is your mother, and her former boss is your father.  When you talk to her in a few weeks, ask her.  She will tell you.  It was always agreed that when you were old enough we would sit you down, and tell you the truth.  No one wanted to deceive you or lie to you.  We felt it would be best if you didn’t know.  It seemed you would feel more a part of the family if you thought you were born to us.  Daddy didn’t agree.  Sadly, he was right, but he was out voted.  I’m sorry you had to learn this on your birthday.”

“It’s okay.  This explains a lot, but I’m still not sure where I fit in, or if I really belong here.  I’ll talk to the boys later.  I want to go out tonight.  I need to get out of here for a few hours to clear my head.”

“Certainly dear.  You and Tommy have a nice time, but  I’m sorry I can’t condone you having relations with him again, even though you have already done so.”

“Mother!  Please!  I don’t like to think about what happened that got me into this mess.  It was an accident.  I have no desire to repeat that mistake again EVER!”

Lydia got up from the table and knocked on the door of Mr. Brownstone’s den.  “Tommy, Mummy says it’s okay if we go out a little bit for my birthday.”

Once in the car, Lydia let loose about every thing that had bothered her for the past several weeks.  She no longer cried, she was a ticking time bomb of anger.  It was agreed they would go to Frannie’s Fountain and get banana splits.  Once inside, Tom found the pay phone and called Animal to get his butt over there to see Lydia.  If Tom didn’t know better, he could have sworn he heard the bike start before the phone was hung up.

“Hi Debbie, nice pictures showing up all over town of you with the Chevalier brothers, and Jeremy.  I suppose if Donnie wasn’t your brother, you’d be making movies with him, too.”

“Yes, they are sexy aren’t they?  With a body like this, I should be in pictures.  If you ever decide to not be such an uptight frigid bitch, maybe you’d like to make a few flicks with them, too.  I know at least Donnie still has the hots for you.”

“Really?  That’s strange since I heard that Donnie is queer.  Percy Badcock has been talking all over town about their love affair.”

“Percy Badcock?  Everybody talks about him, but who’s ever seen him?  I think the whole thing is all a made up lie.  My brother isn’t a twinkle toes.”

“Well, isn’t it strange that your brother is inseparable from the Chevalier brothers, and Jeremy until it’s show time?  Why isn’t he in pictures too if he’s such a great ladies man?  Donnie is as queer as a three dollar bill.  You are just covering for him.”  Lydia walked away laughing, and sat down in a booth waiting for Tommy to come back from using the phone.

“I was surprised to see you over there talking to Debbie Worthington.”  Tom commented.

“Yeah, I just was letting her know I know about the nude photos of her being circulated.  And, I rubbed it in about Donnie being a homosexual.  I’d say this joke is getting way out of hand, but seriously, considering what I went through that night, the disease, now the kid, and being harassed by my so called father, then finding out I’m adopted, a little thing like being accused of being queer doesn’t seem so bad after all.”  Lydia was laughing.

Animal walked in and was happy to see and hear laughter coming from Lydia.  She told him about what happened a moment ago talking with Debbie.  Tom got up and left the two of them alone.

Tom drove over to  Renée’s house, and knocked on the door.  She was all smiles when she saw her boyfriend, but she sure looked frazzled.  The strain of school, and running the household was taking it’s toll.  He missed the carefree nights of parking on Rattalee Lake Road, and having sex sitting up on the car seat.  He thought of all their intimate moments, and he wanted her again very badly.  It was as if Renée read his mind.

“Tommy, my chores are done.  Would you like to go for a walk?”

“Oh boy, would I!”  Hand in hand they walked out of the house, and headed toward the park.  In the shadows of the trees, they hugged and kissed and groped.  “Renée, this isn’t good enough.  I need you, our Viking needs you.  Can we go to our shack?”

“Yah, Tommy.  I just needed some kissing, and to feel you, that you still have desire for me.  I have cleaned the shack a bit so that it is not so disgustingly filthy.”

Once inside, Tom was amazed at the job she had done.  It was by no means a castle, but there was no longer dead leaves and animal debris on the floor.  He drew her back into his arms and kissed her with all of his heart.  They both ended up weak kneed, slumping to the floor.

Tom controlled his passion, and slowly undressed his beautiful Renée.  He let his eyes drink in all of her loveliness as each garment was removed from her body.  His eyes moved up and down the length of her then his mouth followed the trail that his eyes had taken.  Her breasts were slightly larger, and when he kissed them, her rosebuds stood firmer, and looked pinker than ever before. She squealed with delight stroking his head.  This night was for her.  He got his pleasure, but his greatest joy was bringing her to climax again and again.  She vocalized her pleasure.  It thrilled him just to know that this girl was his, and that she enjoyed what their bodies shared.  “Renée, you are so beautiful.  Your face, your skin just glows.”  Tommy lightly stroked her cheeks.  When he touched her lips, she opened her mouth sucking his fingertips.  Before he knew it, he was joined with her body again, pushing hard into the deepest part of her being.  Love grew again between the young people.

Tommy and Renée felt nothing, or no one could ever pry the two of them apart.
