Homeless Sky

What you are about to read is the mirror of our Society.

Do not ask me what happened on that day, all she knew is that she was touched by something beyond her control.

    It was Friday and to make matters worse, it was the 13th. That afternoon, she was speeding to get to the Bank before it closed. She walked into bank, got in line with the many other lost souls who were waiting to withdraw the last piece of change they had in their accounts for the weekend.
  She was filling out a receipt when she noticed a man standing at the counter flirting with the Clerk. You could not help but to hear the conversation. His voice was so loud that you would not hear a train passing by. He was bragging about how he had taken his clients money, and how he had taken them for everything they had. He used the Phrase, " What stupid suckers they were." She just shook her head. She did not know what company he worked for, but a few popped into her mind.
  Her turn was slowly coming up. Still trying to fill out the slip in line, she noticed the line seemed to shift towards one side. She turned to see what was going on.
Not far from the end of the line stood a homeless woman. You could see that time took away the years, and her age was robbed from her soul along time ago. She had a lot of change in two plastic bags in her hands. She looked tired of this life and the bags seemed to weigh her down more then time had. But there she stood in this rat race of a line. She could feel the vibes from the other people shaking their heads and laughing on the inside at her.
Mr. Loud Mouth by this time had also turned around. He looked at the Clerk that he was flirting with and said;
" Honey ,"  if you would ever look like that, I would have to shoot you." He walked over to the homeless woman, gave her a dollar bill and said; "This is probably more then you have in those stupid bags." He turned away laughing as he walked out the Bank's door.
  There was such a silence in the Bank, that if you would have dropped a pin, the building would had fell down around us. It was that quiet. I could see the shame and hurt on her face. The homeless woman felt so low that if there were any ants around, they would have taking her by the hand, and took her down to their hole with them. Two young guys came into the Bank at the same time this all happened. They looked at her and said out loud, "Phew!" "Something stinks in here!"
   Her turn had came to go to the window, but she could not take it anymore. She told the Clerk to wait a minute. She walked over to the homeless woman and said; " May I?" She took one of her bags of money and placed it at the window and then took the homeless woman's hand and led her to the window. She told the Clerk; "I believe it's her turn. She could feel the sneers and looks on her back like a blanket, as she helped this woman. So she turned around and smiled at everyone in the line and went to the next window. But the frowns and faces just looked away.
   Thirteen dollars and fifty cents was the total of the bags. All of the coins were wrapped up neatly in coin rolls. The homeless woman took the money, folded it up and placed it in a torn pocket of one of the dresses she was wearing. She watched her slowly leave the Bank, rolling her shopping cart, she turned the corner and slipped away .

As she got into her car, she noticed the homeless woman sitting on the bricks near the Bank. Just then it hit her! it felt like ten Angels were around her, pulling her out of car, and she found herself standing in front of the homeless woman. She said; "please come with me?" The homeless woman drew back. but she told her; "do not be afraid." The homeless woman wheeled her basket behind her keeping her distance, she could see the confusion in the woman's face. But she smiled and helped her push the basket.    There was a Cafe next to the bank which she led her to. The waitress at first glance said, "Oh we can't"! and before she said another word, the Manager came quickly over. "May I help you?" "Yes" she said. I would like my friend to have a quiet booth to where no one else would stare at her , like your waitress is doing. Please have her order anything she wants. The Manager told the waitress to take the woman to the far booth near the window. Before the Manager said anything else she gave him thirty dollars and asked him to take out five dollars for a tip and what was left after the meal to give to the homeless woman. The manager smiled and said; "don't worry your friend will be fine." And he walked away.
   She stood there for a minute and watched as the waitress hand her the menu. She saw a tiny tear roll down her cheek. She heard the waitress say, "Take your time." She did not know the homeless woman's name so she decided to call her "SKY". Because of the deep past wrinkles and sun burned flesh. She could see in the woman's eyes the clouds that circled her soul. She could not imagine what her life was about. All she knew there had not been any sunshine in the woman's life for years. And if not just for an hour or two she could have this woman feel human again. She thought just maybe the clouds would go to the corner of her lonely soul, so the sky could move in to bring her a little peace.
   As she was driving home, she began to wonder how many Mr. Loud Mouths were out there? Do they even have feelings or a soul? It's not over Mr. Loud Mouth, what you did today is written in your book of life. And maybe one day you will become homeless like Lady Sky.

 In this story let your heart be the judge.

   Did you see Lady Sky today? Or did you the reader look the other way?

How sad there are such people as "Mr. Loudmouth". People often stare at homeless peoples, but they don't know their story. Kind people that come along and help others out are all too rare, but there are good people. This was excellently written, it made you angry and sad at the same time. There were tears in my eyes at the end.

The unfortunate of this world can be seen more and more as each turn or walk around a corner can fill the mind with the ever increasing woes of life. Our soceity goes beyond our own borders, there is sadness across the nations and unfortunately we will continue to find the loud mouth's who have no compassion for the weak and the poor...

Nice work on bringing this view forward...

Dear Angel,

It has been awhile since I have paid a visit to your wonderful Den, and I apologize for not making it back sooner. This was an exceptional heart felt piece, which clearly illustrates how some in society will easily overlook another human being in need of a helping hand. Many times throughout my life, and I am happy to say, I have done exactly what was done for Sky. If in my travels I was able to help I have always tried. It wasn’t done in the hopes of trying to pass through the pearly gates when it’s my time. I was always taught a smile and common courtesy doesn’t cost a dime, yet, leading a helping hand is priceless. The misguided individual, who tossed the dollar bill with the rude comment at Sky, surely doesn’t understand, that he too, could easily be in the same situation. Such a shame, this was an extremely important reminder, and hopefully the message is heard loud and clear. Another exceptionally well-written lesson learned, Christine. Thank you for sharing it. I do hope all went well with your phone call? May God’s peace and love always be upon your doorstep and his soft winds be at your back. Have a great weekend my friend.

Respectfully submitted,
Thomas Lanechanger

Dear Christine;

It is a bittersweet story. One piece of irony, here, is that the loudmouth sleazoid at the head of the line may very well have been one of the white-collar criminals who destroy tens-of-thousands of lives, each year, with their fraudulent schemes. There is surely a sweaty place in hell for such as he...
