This porter trek to Nepal is my fourth and first with employees from BC Tel.We flew from Vancouver to London then on to India where we broke journey in New Delhi staying at the YMCA near Connaught Place. After a side trip via private taxi to Agra for a visit to the Taj Mahal we returned to New Delhi and flew to Kathmandu.I met my trusted Sherpa Dupsang Lama whose family I knew for years.Dumre at 1500 feet is reached in some five hours by private taxi from Kathmandu. From Dumre our porter trek headed north into a subtropical deciduous forest to Bhansar at 1800 feet where we spent the first night. From here we followed the Marsyangdi Khola. The trail passes through many small towns including Tharpani at 1825 feet.We crossed the suspension bridge and continued north to Phalenksangu at 2350 feet where we spent the second night. From here we continued on up the west bank of the Marsyangdi Khola through stands of wet subtropical forest to Besisaha. This is the first police check post.North of town we descended and crossed a tributary. We continued on above the Marsyandi Khola across a suspension bridge to the village of Khudi at 2600 feet where we spent the third night. From here the valley narrows.Himalchuli is the major summit to the east. There are many waterfalls along the way to Manang. We entered the valley of the Musi Khola and continued to Bahundanda. We crossed a cantilever bridge and followed the trail carved out of rock after which we descended to a suspension bridge that crossed over the Marsyangdi at 3650 feet.Just upstream was the few house of Syange at 3725 feet where we spent the fourth night. From here the gorge becomes narrower and the trail rises and falls. We came to the village of Jagat,a old customs post for the salt trade with Tibet. We continued on through the broad leaved forest to reach the settlement of Chamje at 4700 feet. There are many changes in the people and surroundings and the culture is more Tibetan like. The forests around us are now oak.We continued upstream emerging from a gorge into a broad pleasent valley of Manang District. We walked on to the houses of Tal in the center of the valley where at 5600 feet we spent the fifth night---------------------------------------------------
