Upon being warmly (& coooooldly) greeted by scary costumes, excellent beer, etc., the main attraction tonight at Fayetteville, NC's Rock Shop (off King St. near Baldino's Subs and Salads) were three local rockers, openers Phucket Underwater, "Careless Bears" Betray Your Own, and longtime Fayetteville powerhouse Nephilym, who've been playing shows here off and on for over 11 years. I was unfortnately unable to attend tonight's set, but am fortunate to know bassist Bobby Byford, guitarist Josh Smith, singer Brent Underwood, drummer......and second guitarist.....rocked your FACES off ( Masked or not!).
Phucket Underwater began the show with both music & in-between-song banter that simultaneously shocked, annoyed, and electrified the crowd. Off-timed drum rhythms propelled the sludgy, Melvins-esque simplicity of their melodies. Well-done. And, yes: "Lumberton" is "bumfuck" as all Hell. Go, Fayetteville!! :P
Second act Betray Your Own bombarded us, utilizing the middle stage pillar with no mercy and full intent to never let us look at CareBears(C) the same way again (in true Halloween spirit, the five were dressed as various "Careless Bears", including my newfound favorite: High Bear). Not for the weak of stomach; definitely for those who want to "fuck some shit up!" :D Insanely quick guitar patterns accompanied deathmetal vocals and a fantastic rhythm section stomp.
My apologies to Nephilym for not being able to adequately review your performance! I am confident it was an excellent one, and special thanks to Mike's beautiful mother for the advice, etc. Great show, all...and keep the Faith--Fayetteville, NC WILL be on the motherfuckin' map.
