A young girl with a rather unusual name shares her story.

Image (c) 2011, by Karla Dorman.

Magenta Grace Privkar is my name.  I am fourteen years old.  I live in a suburb of Chicago (Illinois) with my family.

I am in the eighth grade.  This coming September, I will be in high school.  I can hardly wait!

I am Indian-American.  My grandparents were born in the country of India, but right after they got married, they came here to America to have a better life.  Here was where my father was born.  He then met Ma, and they got married sixteen years ago.  They had three children:  me (Magenta), and my brother Sanjay (11), as well as my sister, Coral Marie, who is seven.

We also have a dog,  an American Eskie (Eskimo) dog that I named Princess.  She is all white with ears that stick up like two small flags atop her head and a big, bushy tail that curls up over her back.  She is very friendly and beautiful; I just love Princess so much!

We did have a cat, a Ragdoll named Raggie, but he ran away when a neighbor's Rottweiler dog chased him off.  He never came back.  I miss him.

When I am not at school (or doing homework), I love to hang out with my friends, talk on the phone (mostly about boys, school stuff, or the latest fads), write stories/poems on the Internet (I have my own blogging site; this is where I post my writings, but a friend told me about www.authorsden.com, which is a writing site for writers), dance, go to church every Sunday (we go to a Baptist church; we are Christian), and read (seems that I always have my nose buried in a book before I go to bed for the night!).  I have a very happy and good life.

I don't know why I was named Magenta, but I guess it's because Ma liked the color.  So she wanted to name her child after her favorite color.  Some people call me Maj or Maggie for short, but I prefer my whole, real name.  And most people call my sister Corrie and my brother, Sanj; which bothers Father because he thinks that nicknames are disrespectful.

Father is a doctor who works long hours (he's a thoracic surgeon); as for Ma, she stays home and takes care of us, the children.  We also have grandmother and grandfather living with us, so we have a full, busy house.

Well, it's too up for me to be up, so I am going back to sleep now.  I will write in here again soon; feel I have more of my story to write about.  This isn't the last time you will have heard from me.  Until then, take care and may God bless you always!

~Love, your friend in Illinois, Magenta Grace Privkar.
