I.~ Short(!yes) vinettes on the life I have lead before and still lead here at "Lake Stinkhole" (aka Lake Kerr, Florida). Mostly fishing and rowing mishaps, misadventures, etc. Many go back years and ALL are true events, given a humorous twist (hopefully!) Many did not really happen here at my present "swampy enclave" where I moved from Daytona Beach, FL in 2007. Enjoy!

I. Story from MIKE (5/7/11)

I once parked a fly with a somewhat wayward cast on the tip of what seemed a good mud bank in a canal about 30 feet across where I was ankle deep in water. I was about to jiggle it into the adjoining water when I noticed the mud bank twitch a bit. Well it was early morning, things were still and the light low, but that “mud bank” suddenly took on the form of a huge 12-foot alligator (just plain ‘gator around here). It was March and mating season; after a pretty cool night luckily he/she was sluggish! (That probably saved my arse!) Anyway, it had landed on the back of his neck and the only course of action was a sensible retreat. I quietly laid the rod and line down on the bank, backed up a few steps, very slooowly, being sure he wasn’t gonna turn suddenly. I quickly calculated (since this was the biggest one I’d ever seen up this close!) that Mr. Gator was only about 3 body lengths away from my legs. Ummm, that means one turn and another couple of leaps and I’d be breakfast. And I’ve since learned that big gators can move even faster than the little fellas. After I was up a bit on the muddy bank and on the path… well I turned and ran like the Devil! I never believed I could run so fast in a 50-yard dash since my high school days. I stopped a safe distance away and luckily, my friend was swimming off the other way and amazingly had not dragged my rod out with him. I hesitated some time, but eventually VERY CAUTIOUSLY crept back to the bank to get my rod…From then on I’m very suspicious of dark gray mud banks in low light.

OK, so I don’t have any heroic stories to tell like our friend Roz Savage, just “chicken tales,” but I don’t make my living this way (a life wasted I guess!)

I'm surprised that you were that worried. I recall a time when I took some friends from Wisconsin to Brazos Bend State Park, about 30 min. drive from Southwest Houston.

As we walked down to the fishing pier where I never saw anybody fishing, there was a large gator, perhaps a 10 footer, lying by the entry to the pier sunning. Everyone was just walking by him (about 3 feet away) going out to the pier to observe birds and just enjoy the scenery in the late afternoon. Some folks were taking pictures of the gator and some were close enough to touch it. Never heard of anyone getting bit or mauled there. But I did see some fishermen having trouble with pesky gators trying to take their catches.

A very wise philosophy, my friend. Being a northerner, I didn't learn about your moving mud banks until I spent lots of time down on the Gulf after Katrina attempting to rescue pets. That storm really stirred up a lot of those 'mud banks' and very sadly, they devoured many a starving dog or cat. I couldn't even count just how many of those gray moving mud banks that I saw.
