How I got started with building wine cellars. My travels across the nation

What was wrong with this guy?

Maybe this was the way to do it, getting a job with a major wine cellar

company in New York. I called Steve Del Duca at the Wine Enthusiast, (a

catalog company in New York that sells wine cellars and wine accessories),

to see if they were hiring a wine cellar installer. The immediate answer

was NO. That, you would think, would be the end of it. I called again

about a week later and asked the same question. Again the answer was a

resounding NO

I could do the job or not; he just simply wouldn’t listen. I tried again few

more times and always got the same answer: NO.

So then one day I called him up and told him that he was making a

big mistake by not even listening to me. I even went as far as to tell him

I was the best in the wine cellar business. That got his attention, and we

had about a half an hour conversation by phone. He told me to send him

some of my work and he would look at it. I knew what that meant:

didn’t hear from him for quite a while, so I called him back again. Now he

was not there, or so I was told. I was even more determined than ever now

to get through to him. This went on for about six months before I finally

got a hold of him. I asked if he had looked at the pictures of finished

wine cellars I had sent him, and he said not yet. Now this guy was really

bugging me. I told him to look at the pictures of the wine cellars and I

would call back the next day. He said that was fine. I waited an extra day,

thinking I would be cool about it. Come to find out he wasn’t even there

for the next few days. It took about another week or so for me to get in

touch with him. By now Steve, had finally looked at my pictures of my

completed wine cellars. Steve finally called me and asked me to come to

New York to meet the salespeople and staff. Now I had my foot in the

door and felt good about it. I put my dog, Buster, in the truck and off on

a road trip to New York we went.
